Eddie Hearn has admitted to talkSPORT that Anthony Joshua is ‘hurting’ after his devastating defeat at the hands of Daniel Dubois.

Joshua was knocked out by his fellow countryman in front of a capacity crowd at Wembley Stadium in September.

It marked the fourth defeat of his professional career and his most damaging to date, with Dubois dropping Joshua four times en route to the eventual fifth-round stoppage.

Several members of the boxing fraternity called for the two-time unified heavyweight champion to hang up his gloves immediately after the contest.

However, AJ came out a couple of days later and insisted he would continue fighting.

And according to Hearn, his future was never up for discussion.

Asked if Joshua ever considered retiring during an appearance on talkSPORT‘s White and Jordan show on Thursday afternoon, Hearn replied: “No, never, never.

“One because physically he feels good and he’s looking good.

“But also because when you suffer a loss like that the decision is not, ‘Shall we retire?’ It’s now about, ‘How do we look when we come back?'”

That isn’t to say that Joshua didn’t battle his own demons though.

“Honestly, I think after a fight like that, he is a very brave faced guy publicly, he wants to show you how to accept defeat humbly,” Hearn added.

“And I think a fighter off the back of a defeat a couple of weeks after they are generally okay.

“They go back to the gym, everyone is giving them a pat on the back and they are okay.

“But I would say he has struggled if I am honest. I always say to a fighter, ‘I want you to struggle, I want it to hurt really bad’.

“I don’t want AJ to go, ‘Oh well,’ and he’s never going to be that type of fighter.

“Yeah, he is hurting. He took a pasting at times in that fight and I think he has got his back up and he wants to come back stronger.

“I don’t think it is ever easy. The reason this sport is so compelling is because you are on your own in there.

“When you are scrambling on the floor to get up and hang on for dear life, time and time again it is very humbling and probably very humiliating.

“He had to go through that experience. He never stopped trying, he never stopped trying to get up till the point where he couldn’t get up.

“I think he showed a lot of heart but he got well beaten and he needs to go back and work out why.”

When Joshua suffered back-to-back defeats to Oleksandr Usyk in 2021 and 2022, he rebuilt his career by knocking over multiple fringe-level contenders.

But Hearn insists that won’t be the case this time around.

In fact, the Matchroom Boxing chief believes there are only two fights left for his client.

“I mean, for us, obviously, talking to His Excellency, if Fury was to win, we have a chance to make Fury against AJ for the unified world heavyweight championship, which will be the biggest fight in the sport,” Hearn continued.

“If he loses, we still have the chance to make AJ against Fury.

“Maybe as a, ‘Go on, boys, go to war for two fights and then maybe sail off into the sunset.’

“Who knows? Or Tyson Fury could lose and you might never see him again. So for us, you know, with the AJ hat on, there’s only really two fights for him in boxing.

“One is a Daniel Dubois rematch and one is a Tyson Fury fight.

“I don’t think there’s interest in us having an interim fight or coming back against this guy in the top 15.

“But how many fights have we got left? Could be one, could be three, but it’s that range.”

Anthony Joshua is no longer a heavyweight titlist, but he remains one of the top draws in all of boxing. The man is extremely entertaining in the ring. More often than not, the towering Londoner delivers action. That’s why fans would love to see Joshua battle fellow former heavyweight titlist Tyson Fury in the near future. A Joshua-Fury match might not be the relevant battle fans have longed for over the years…then again, it just might be. Fury, after all, is battling Oleksandr Usyk later this month. Should he win the rematch against the brilliant Usyk, Fury will be a world titlist yet again.

That’s good news for Joshua, who would no doubt love to be able to fight for a world title once again. Ironically enough, Joshua – who has faced and been bested by Usyk twice himself – thinks Fury will lose to Usyk in the rematch, much as Fury lost to Usyk in their first fight. “I think it’s going to be a tough fight early on,” Joshua told Queensbury Promotions (via Business Day) and then I feel like Usyk will edge it again.” Joshua isn’t alone in his thinking, though the first fight between Usyk and Fury was extremely close.'Joshua should step aside to allow Fury vs Usyk'

Still, Joshua feels Usyk’s skills will once again lead him to victory over Fury. “He’s a class operator,” Joshua said of Usyk, “so I think Usyk’s one of the best out there. That’s why I think he’ll win.” Things may not work out the way Joshua predicts, but there’s no doubt Joshua knows that which of he speaks. For he’s faced Usyk for a full twenty four rounds. Unfortunately (for Joshua, at least) Usyk won both those fights in fairly dominant fashion. Yet there’s little doubt that Joshua knows what it’s like to face Usyk, perhaps better than anyone.

Whether or not Fury wins the Usyk rematch, there will still be interest in seeing he and Joshua throw down. Joshua won’t be able to fight Fury for any heavyweight titles, though, if Fury loses to Usyk a second time. The fight might then be considered a second tier affair, popular though it would undoubtedly be. Joshua is perhaps slipping, as his recent loss to Daniel Dubois might indicate. Fury might be considered a bit over the hill himself should he come up short against Usyk twice in a row. Still, the longed for Joshua-Fury fight will feel like unfinished businesses for each fighter should they never meet in the ring.

A match-up between Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder is set for 2025.

In a thrilling matchup between the United Kingdom and the United States, Anthony Joshua is predicted to face Deontay Wilder.

This year, the two former world champions were scheduled to finally meet, but Wilder lost unexpectedly to Joseph Parker.

Zhilei Zhang then knocked him out, and in September, Daniel Dubois stopped AJ after five rounds.

Richard Torrez, an 11-0 American professional and US Olympian, is still interested in seeing the two square off, though.

Turki Alalshikh, the powerful Saudi boxing head, recently announced plans to hold a 6v6 series of contests between the United Kingdom and the United States.

In June, Eddie Hearn’s stable of Matchroom fighters lost against Frank Warren’s Queensbury Promotions.

However, Hearn and Warren might team up this time to fight Golden Boy of America and Top Rank.

Joshua was expected to take a rematch against Dubois but is now out for an extended period.

Wilder on the other hand has set his sights on fighting Ngannou.

An avenue might have opened up to allow Anthony Joshua a shot at a world title, without the former champion needing to face Daniel Dubois, Tyson Fury or Oleksandr Usyk.

Joshua, a former two-time heavyweight champion, failed to take the IBF title from Dubois in September, losing to his fellow Briton by knockout at Wembley Stadium.

“AJ”, 35, has been linked to a rematch with Dubois, 27, but the latter seems set for a title defence against Joseph Parker in February. Meanwhile, Fury and Usyk will clash for the unified belts on 21 December – seven months after Usyk outpointed the “Gypsy King”.

Usyk became undisputed champion with his win in May, but he soon vacated the IBF belt, meaning interim champion Dubois was elevated.

The Ukrainian will defend the remaining major titles against Fury, including the WBC gold, yet the organisation has agreed to sanction an interim title fight between Zhilei Zhang and Agit Kabayel. And Joshua could challenge the winner of that bout, according to WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman.

Sulaiman told Sky Sports on Monday (2 December): “The WBC has received a formal request to sanction such a fight for the interim title, and the WBC will accept to sanction it.

“Why? Because we have done everything possible for the past several years to reach the ultimate, great fights in each weight category, especially [at heavyweight].

“All this time we have been perfectly clear and transparent that the WBC will not impose any mandatory that goes against having the ultimate undisputed champion, because they’re fighting the best available.

“There’s no better fight than Usyk vs Fury, so with that fight happening and then the possibilities for the future, we have accepted the No 2 and No 3 to fight for the interim title. Keep them active, and keep the division having the best fights possible.” Kabayel is ranked second, while Zhang is actually seeded fourth – below the much-avoided Martin Bakole.

“For the winner on 21 December, there’s many options,” Sulaiman continued. “Why should anyone get in the way of a third fight? Or the fight again for undisputed [against Dubois]? Or any high-level event, while we can accommodate the champion [and have a] fight for an interim title, where the winner is going to be a high-level, sensational possibility? So, we’re all for having undisputed champions.”

Joshua is ranked sixth by the WBC, and Sulaiman, when asked whether AJ could challenge Zhang or Kabayel, said: “Absolutely. That’s an opening of possibilities for more fights to continue to take place.”

Zhang, 41, knocked out Joe Joyce twice in 2023 and dropped Joseph Parker twice in a decision loss in March. The Chinese star then bounced back in June, brutally knocking out Deontay Wilder.

Meanwhile, Kabayel is on a run of four straight knockout wins. The German, 32, most recently beat Frank Sanchez in May.

Eddie Hearn has predicted that Anthony Joshua will return to the ring in “May or June”, with the former champion set to miss out on February’s planned mega-card in Saudi Arabia.

Boxing journalist Dan Rafael reported this week that Daniel Dubois will defend the IBF heavyweight title against Joseph Parker on 22 February, with Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol 2 among the other planned bouts in Riyadh.

Dubois’s first title defence came in September, when he knocked out Joshua at Wembley Stadium, and talk quickly turned to a rematch. But Joshua will have to wait to get his hands on his fellow Briton again, it seems – while Hearn suggested that AJ vs Fury could be an alternative move.

Fury is due to box on 21 December, aiming to avenge his May defeat by Oleksandr Usyk, as the pair vie for the Ukrainian’s unified titles.

“I think the camp will start at the beginning of next year now,” Hearn told Pro Boxing Fans. “There’s a lot of work to do for AJ. He’s very motivated, he’s had a good rest, and he’ll have another rest [in] December as well.

“I think you’ll see him back around May or June. For me, the two fights are Daniel Dubois and Tyson Fury.

“Obviously we’ll be watching, he’ll be there ringside on 21 December, and I think it’ll be one of [Dubois and Fury] next. I always get asked every day, on the street, petrol stations, wherever it is: ‘When are we gonna see AJ against Fury? We don’t care about [Dubois and Usyk’s roles]; when are [Joshua and Fury] gonna fight each other?’

“I think win or lose [for Fury against Usyk], you’re going to see that fight. But we’d much rather Tyson Fury won, because he’d be world heavyweight champion again. Either way, I think we need to see that fight in 2025, and I believe we will.”

Usyk held the unified titles before taking the WBC belt from Fury in May, becoming the first undisputed heavyweight champion in almost 25 years. He was then forced to vacate the IBF title, however, meaning Dubois was upgraded from interim champion to regular champion.

Should Usyk and Dubois win their upcoming fights, they could be set for an undisputed bout in 2025 – two years after the Ukrainian stopped the Briton in Poland.

That could open the door for Joshua to fight Fury, in a clash that has been desired by fans for years.

Tyson Fury has described Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois as limited fighters while expressing confidence in his superior boxing skills ahead of his December rematch with Oleksandr Usyk.

The ‘Gypsy King,’ who will challenge Usyk for three heavyweight titles in Riyadh, dismissed calls to alter his approach, instead highlighted his unique style as the key to victory.

“Pretty much the same as I did before – good boxing. For someone of my size and weight, it’s unusual to be able to box and slip, so why would I take that out of my game?” Fury told TNT Sports.

“People say I should walk forward on Usyk, chase him down and hit him, but if it were that easy, why didn’t Joshua, who is a big, strong man, do it? Why didn’t Dubois manage it? Those men are limited compared to me – very limited.”

Fury, whose loss to Usyk in May saw the Ukrainian claim the undisputed heavyweight crown, remains confident in his strategy, citing his agility, focus, and versatility as decisive factors in the rematch.

“A man who charges straight at him is like Christmas come early. I’m a side-on boxer – slipping, sliding, throwing uppercuts, and hooking. I’ll do all that, but with more focus. That’s my route to victory,” he added.

Fury also dismissed criticism of his corner team, which includes his father, John Fury, alongside trainers SugarHill Steward and Andy Lee.

“People can have their opinions, but at the end of the day, they’re not the ones stepping into the ring. If I’m happy, the world’s happy – and I’m happy,” he said.

Meanwhile, Usyk has played down the impact of Fury’s power in their first encounter – a claim Fury disputes. Despite the rivalry, Fury has accepted his earlier defeat with humility.

“I believe God has a plan for everyone, and in that plan, Usyk was meant to win. He did, so fair play to him,” Fury remarked.

Fury’s comments about Joshua and Dubois come amidst ongoing speculation about their futures in the heavyweight division. Joshua,34, suffered a fifth-round knockout loss to Dubois in September, raising questions about his next steps.

Trainer Tony Sims recently suggested that a long-awaited bout between Fury and Joshua remains a possibility, regardless of the outcome of Fury’s rematch with Usyk.

Daniel Dubois is reportedly set to make the second defence of his IBF title against Joseph Parker on February 22 instead of Anthony Joshua.

The heavyweight clash is expected to headline a stacked card in Saudi Arabia, which could include Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol’s rematch for the former’s undisputed light-heavyweight crown following their tight encounter in October.

That is according to esteemed boxing journalist Dan Rafael, who also reports that an IBF welterweight title fight between champion Jaron Ennis and challenger Vergil Ortiz is also in the works for the February bill.

Ennis recently defended the red and gold strap against Karen Chukhadzhian in a rematch last month and has been calling for the big fights to no avail.

Finally, he will face a worthy challenger in fellow undefeated fighter Ortiz, who comes in fresh off a gruelling majority decision win over Serhii Bohachuk.

Hamzah Sheeraz’s long-awaited shot at middleweight gold could also land on the bill.

Sheeraz, who is ranked highly with all four major sanctioning bodies, has chosen to go down the WBC route first and will face champion Carlos Adames next.

The fifth fight that is being explored for February is an all-action heavyweight dust-up between Agit Kabayel and Zhilei Zhang.

Kabayel is the highest-ranked heavyweight by the IBF and was slated to be Dubois’ next opponent for a time after he pulled out of a final eliminator with Martin Bakole.

Instead, he is being targeted for a fight with Zhang, while Parker is the frontrunner to box Dubois.

‘Triple D’ knocked out Joshua in September to retain his IBF belt and was in talks over an immediate sequel.

However, negotiations have since fallen by the wayside.

As a result, Dubois’ team moved on from the all-British showdown and began talking to other potential foes.

IBF president Daryl Peoples confirmed earlier this month that Dubois ‘can make an optional defence of his world title against any ranked fighter before April 22’.

Parker is not currently ranked by the IBF due to his status as a WBO ‘interim’ champion.

The Kiwi, who previously held the full WBO world title before losing it to Joshua in 2018, could give up the ‘interim’ trinket and receive a ranking from the IBF before February 22 so it is not an insurmountable hurdle to overcome.

Parker called for a fight with Dubois last month when he appeared on talkSPORT Fight Night.

“I have been very vocal about wanting to fight Daniel Dubois,” he said.

“I think he’s done exceptionally well, he done a great job against Anthony Joshua to get that devastating KO.

“He looked great versus Jarrell Miller, Filip Hrgovic and Anthony Joshua. But there’s a difference.

“I’m fresh, I’m hungry and ready to go. I’ve been waiting since March for a big fight, let’s get it on now.

“I feel like they have asked around different opponents to see which one fits, so there are a few hurdles to jump.

“But I feel like it can happen and I want it to happen, but hopefully everyone can come together and make it happen.”

Tyson Fury has branded rivals Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois “limited” ahead of his rematch with Oleksandr Usyk.

Fury is preparing for his sequel with Usyk having lost to the Ukrainian in their undisputed world title fight in May. Only three belts will be on the line in Riyhad four days before Christmas as Fury attempts to avenge his sole career defeat. And the Brit has no plans to change his style, despite almost being stopped by Usyk.

Asked how he will approach the rematch, Fury told TNT Sports: “Pretty much the same as I did before, good boxing. Someone of my size and heaviness, it’s not normal that I should be able to box and slip, so why would I take that away from my game? People say to me I need to walk forward on Usyk, walk him down and hit him, but if it was so easy why didn’t Joshua, who is a big strong man, do that? Why didn’t Dubois do it? Those men are limited compared to me, very limited.

“A man who walks forward to him is Christmas come early. I’m a side-on boxer, slipping, sliding, uppercutting, hooking, I’m going to do that but with more focus. A little bit more focused on my job, I think that’s my way to victory.” Fury also confirmed he won’t make any changes to his corner after his dad John came in for criticism for his role in the defeat.

Fury Sr was one of three voices yelling instructions to to Fury between rounds, alongside trainers SugarHill Steward and Andy Lee. But Fury insists he has ignored those calling for him remove his dad. “People can have opinions… but at the end of the day they’re not in the ring doing the fighting so it’s unimportant what they think about what’s going on in my corner. If I’m happy, the world’s happy, and I’m happy.”

Usyk insisted he was never hurt by Fury, while the beaten man denied the fight should have been stopped when he came under huge pressure in the ninth round. “It’s the world heavyweight title fight, undisputed [so the fight should not have been stopped].” he said. “At least a man’s got to go down to the floor and someone like me, who has been down loads of times, who gets back up, at least give me one chance.

“I’m a big believer in God. So I believe that God has a plan for everybody, and the plan was for Usyk to win this fight. And he did, so fair play. I knew it was a close fight. I thought I’d done enough, but listen, I don’t complain. He’s got the victory. I was happy for him. I congratulated him. I was happy that we both went home to our family safe.”

Former heavyweight champion of the world Anthony Joshua could be entering his final year in the sport, according to his promoter Eddie Hearn.

In an interview with The Times, the Matchroom Sport chief has hinted at what the future could look like for the 35-year-old. Joshua was beaten by Daniel Dubois earlier this year, a damaging defeat for the two-time heavyweight champion of the world who had been eyeing a third stint at the top of the division..

Hearn had previously stated that Joshua would consider activating the rematch clause in the deal, with a rematch mooted for February 2025. However, Joshua has sustained a few niggling injuries, casting doubt over the rematch, likely pushing the fight back to later in the year.

Brentwood-born promoter Hearn has been by Joshua’s side throughout his career, having also worked with the likes of Canelo Álvarez, Gennady Golovkin, Vasyl Lomachenko and Katie Taylor, all of whom have gone on to be world champions. Joshua was forced to deny retirement calls after his defeat to Dubois, insisting he still had more to give in the sport.

Speaking after Katie Taylor’s recent win over Amada Serrano, with retirement looming for the Irish fighter, Hearn also said: “this could be [Joshua’s] last year in the sport.” The general consensus is that AJ, who has amassed an estimated £175million from his boxing career, will face Tyson Fury in his final fight before hanging up his gloves.

Joshua is said to chomping at the bit to arrange a rematch with Dubois, which will likely take place in May or June, according to Hearn. Speaking to The Sun earlier this month, Hearn said: “He wanted to fight on February 22 but unfortunately we kind of had to overrule him on this and say no because we can’t afford not to get this right.

“If you get beaten again by Daniel Dubois you have to seriously consider your future. We got one last chapter in this career that we need to make sure we get 100 per cent spot on.

“So when he comes back in May or June or whenever that’s gonna be you got to be physically mentally 100 per cent ready. He wants to rematch Daniel so bad.”

Earlier this week, speculation saw YouTuber-turned-boxer, Jake Paul, linked with a fight with Joshua, having been called out by Dubois following his win over Mike Tyson. Promoter, Nakisa Bidarian has suggested that a bout with both heavyweights is an enticing proposition for the American fighter.

It remains to be seen whether Joshua would engage in talks with Paul, but a super fight with Fury would be the biggest fight in the heavyweight division, despite both fighters having lost to Oleksandr Usky – the current reigning heavyweight champion of the world.

Both Fury and AJ have gone back and fourth over the years, but neither party has been able to strike a deal. There’s hope among boxing that a fight can be agreed for next year.

Recently, former European middleweight champion Matthew Macklin claimed on Sky Sports that Anthony Joshua’s decision not to pursue an immediate rematch against Daniel Dubois is not surprising and that he might even retire from boxing after his recent loss.

On September 21, 2024, Daniel Dubois successfully defended the IBF world title by unexpectedly knocking out Anthony Joshua in the fifth round.

The fight, held at Wembley Stadium, was a decisive moment for both fighters. Joshua, who came off two consecutive victories with his new trainer, entered the ring with high confidence.

However, the result was a resounding defeat for Anthony Joshua and has cast doubt on his future in the ring.

It was previously reported that the rematch between Joshua and Dubois was scheduled for February 2025, but Joshua canceled it, citing it was too soon. Speaking with Sky Sports, former boxer Matthew Macklin shared his thoughts on Joshua’s decision.

“I always thought once the dust had settled, it was a fight that wouldn’t happen,” Macklin remarked.

“Personally, I think that could be that for Joshua anyway,” Macklin opined.

At 34 years of age, Joshua is at a pivotal moment in his career, where a loss of this magnitude can impact his confidence. Macklin added that the defeat was so clear that it won’t be easy for Joshua to recover.

“I understood the talk of it because, for Joshua, his pride was hurting, and when your pride is hurting, you just want to get back in there to rectify the situation,” Macklin stated.

“A loss like that will take a lot to come back from. At 34 years of age, you don’t get better; it goes downhill from here,” the Sky Sports analyst claimed.

Matthew Macklin’s comments also include the possibility of Anthony Joshua retiring from boxing.

Watch all angles of Dubois' huge knockout punch which ended his fight with Joshua

According to the expert, the two-time world champion might choose to reflect on his future after a decade of success in the heavyweight division.

“When the dust settles, he has time to reflect and think about his next move. It wouldn’t shock me at all if AJ doesn’t box again and retires. And what a career he would have had,” Macklin expressed.

While Joshua decides his future, Daniel Dubois is preparing to defend his IBF world title against New Zealand’s Joseph Parker in February.

Parker has made a comeback after his loss to Joe Joyce in 2022, securing impressive victories over Deontay Wilder and Zhilei Zhang.

Macklin believes that Parker is at the peak of his career. He also thinks the fight between Dubois and Parker will be highly competitive, emphasizing that the current Dubois has more confidence and physical form than ever.

On the other hand, there is still speculation about a possible fight between Joshua and Tyson Fury, especially if Fury manages to defeat Oleksandr Usyk. However, Macklin states that it’s uncertain whether Joshua will have the desire to continue fighting.

“The Tyson Fury fight could still happen if he were to beat Oleksandr Usyk. It would still be a huge fight, but I just don’t know what AJ’s appetite for boxing is at this point; it’s hard to say.”

The future of Anthony Joshua remains uncertain, and there is no official date for his return yet. However, Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, made it clear that Joshua will be ready to step back into the ring in May or June 2025.
