Canelo Alvarez‘s next opponent before he takes on Terence Crawford has been revealed.

It was a chaotic week for Canelo, with the Mexican superstar seemingly going from one opponent to the other over the course of a few days.

His fight with Crawford was abruptly reported as being off, before it then emerged that Alvarez was in negotiations for a shock clash against YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul.

One final twist then saw the Paul fight fall through, with Canelo once again taking on Crawford in September whilst also signing a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season.

It meant that Alvarez was in search for an opponent in May before facing ‘Bud’ in September, and it has now been revealed by Saudi chief Turki Alalshikh that he will take on IBF super-middleweight champion William Scull.

“The legend Saul Alvarez Canelo will fight William Scull in undisputed fight in Riyadh on the 3rd of May … if he win the fight in September will be undisputed again.”

Canelo then needed just two words himself to respond to the announcement, as he looks to once again become undisputed super-middleweight champion.

“Let’s go!”

Alvarez was undisputed champion at 168lbs up until he was stripped of the IBF belt last year after choosing to take on Edgar Berlanga instead of mandatory challenger Scull. At the time, he was unbothered by the move, telling Million Dollaz Worth Of Game:

“There are levels. There are stars and there are superstars. They make the championship, not the championship makes them. Who is William Scull? I never hear about him. I’m not gonna do whatever they want. I’m gonna do whatever I want. Because I deserve it, because of all I have done.”

Scull then won the vacant belt with a victory over Vladimir Shishkin in October, and has been vocal ever since that he wants the fight against Canelo, who most certainly knows who he is now.

He will now have that chance to shock the world when he takes on the pound-for-pound star in May, but most boxing fans will now be excited about the prospect of the Canelo vs Crawford bout potentially being for undisputed status.

It’s understandable. Given its scale, the despair would be widespread. It’s not every day that one gets an opportunity to see two pound-for-pound best boxers in the world settling for a momentous clash.

For a little while, it appeared that the fight between Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez was a done deal. But bad tidings weren’t far. It became clear – the September clash between the two former undisputed kings has been scrapped.

New developments have been unfolding. Perhaps the most prominent being a potential Cinco de Mayo matchup between Canelo Alvarez and Jake Paul. However, a few reports suggest it may not be all over with the Canelo-Crawford duel. Hopes received a major boost when fans came across a few cryptic messages from HE Turki Alalshikh, Alvarez, and later, Crawford. So fans can keep their fingers crossed. There’s power in faith. Given the nitty-gritty of the interaction, their patience might be rewarded with some good news.

JUST IN: “It’ll Shock The World”: Terence Crawford Officially Announces Who He Will Fight Next

Don’t mess with the lion 🦁 4 fights for Canelo with Riyadh Season … ” wrote HE Turki Alalshikh. The two sides even appear to have reached an agreement. Using the laws of the jungle as a metaphor, the Riyadh Season head emphasized that strong, confident people don’t worry about what insignificant people think of them. The real challenge isn’t the environment or the circumstances, but the powerful individual within it, HE Alalshikh added further.

Canelo Alvarez couldn’t have disagreed with the powerful message. The Nebraskan southpaw appeared a bit more circumspect. “I’m waiting on Canelo in September and going to shock the world in Riyadh Season!” he said.

The Ring magazine updated a few details about the Canelo-Riyadh Season deal. “Turki Alalshikh has revealed a four-fight deal between Canelo Alvarez and Riyadh Season is done. Alalshikh has also shared that the first fight will be held in Riyadh in May,” read the esteemed publication’s post.

As it laid out further details about the matchups that extend up to October 2026, perhaps the one that must have caught the maximum attention would have been the second fixture. It was clearly mentioned. “Big fight in Las Vegas vs. Terence Crawford in September.” So the fight is still on the table.

Given the overall confusion, one could take some help from Mike Coppinger‘s tweet. Shedding light on what may have transpired, the boxing insider shared that Canelo vs. Jake Paul was nearly confirmed, but not quite done. However, “Canelo Alvarez has instead closed a four-fight deal with Turki Alalshikh and Riyadh Season to salvage the Terence Crawford mega fight in September.

But what happens to Jake Paul? ‘The Problem Child’ may have already fired the opening shot! According to Coppinger, for the May fixture, two options – Jermall Charlo and Bruno Surace – are currently being looked at. Then after the Crawford epic, for the two remaining bouts potentially scheduled for 2026, Alvarez may begin with a rematch against Dmitry Bivol. Later he could pick either Hamzah Sheeraz or even Chris Eubank Jr.

So fans need not lose heart. As much as they take delight in fixed schedules, the phase preceding the fights may often appear chaotic and often boring.

The Saudis are apparently going to war with Jake Paul. On Thursday afternoon, it appeared that Paul had a deal in place to fight Canelo Alvarez in May.

News of the Paul-Alvarez fight apparently annoyed Saudi backer Turki Alalshikh, who reportedly stopped negotiating with the Mexican superstar on other potential deals if he fought the YouTube star-turned-boxer.

Via The Ring

According to boxing insider Michael Coppinger of ESPN, Turki Alalshikh – Head of Riyadh Season and the General Entertainment Authority – is “suspending efforts” to finalize a lucrative three-fight deal with super middleweight world champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

As previously reported by The Ring, an agreement was in place for Canelo to defend his super middleweight crown against Terence Crawford on a September date at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The fight with Crawford would have been the first bout of this agreement.

Coppinger indicates that Canelo and Crawford signed term sheets after agreeing to a deal – and that the Mexican star’s decision to move forward with a planned fight against social media star Jake Paul is the potential cause for the fallout in finalizing the multi-fight pact

JUST IN: “It’ll Shock The World”: Terence Crawford Officially Announces Who He Will Fight Next

On Friday morning, Alvarez had a last-minute change of heart, and announced that he would be signing a four-fight deal with the Saudis and would not be fighting Paul.

An annoyed Paul took to social media to fire shots at Canelo for aligning himself with the Saudis.

“Breaking news: Canelo Alvarez ducked me Jake Paul and is now an owned slave with no regard for the pride of the Mexican people who support him on US soil. it’s not surprising when his whole career he has done nothing for the sport of boxing outside the ring. I’m the new face of boxing. You cannot have the biggest fight of 2025 without my name involved. When all of your events tank and lose money you will all realize who the king of the sport is. 28 years old. Biggest fight in boxing history. My own boss. Not owned. 5 years in. All of you felines want to see me fail, but god has other plans. It’s the era of good. The era of the elephant. It’s the era of MVP.”

Canelo Alvarez’s blockbuster showdown with Terence Crawford has now been scrapped.

The rivals were set to meet in Las Vegas on September 13 at super-middleweight but The Ring magazine is now reporting the fight has been cancelled. The meeting would have seen Crawford move up two weight divisions and the postponement comes days after reports suggesting Alvarez will fight Jake Paul in May.

Crawford had been pushing the fight for almost a year and both men recently spoke to Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh in London – who has been a huge advocate of this mouthwatering showdown. Terms were believed to have been agreed with an official announcement imminent.

Following the recent meeting with HE, Alvarez was expected to sign a three-fight deal with Alalshikh and was expected to compete in the ring before taking on Crawford in September. Previous reports claimed that ‘Saul’ would be open to a showdown with IBF mandatory challenger William Scull before talks opened with YouTuber Paul.

As for Crawford, the undefeated American star recently moved up to 154lbs and took on Israil Madrimov – where he eventually became a four-weight world champion. Last year, it looked like a clash between the pair was seemingly off the cards after Alalshikh revealed he had no interest in pursuing it anymore. His Excellency had the dust-up at the top of his boxing wishlist and even made the offer to ‘Saul’, but talks between the pair broke down.

Both Crawford and Alalshikh jumped on an Instagram live during UFC 306 back in September – with ‘Bud’ going on to call out Canelo following the latter’s win over Edgar Berlanga. “Yo Turki, tell them we are going to go for Canelo next,” said Crawford. “Yes,” replied Alalshikh. “Let’s go! Canelo, come on. We are ready.”

Crawford then added: “You heard it from him. Just put me in the game b****. Canelo-Crawford, the biggest fight in boxing. But we stay ready though. We stay ready, that way we ain’t got to get ready.”

Jake Paul sure knows how to promote himself. The boxing superstar has been teasing who his next opponent is in the ring and had many believing it was going to be his brother Logan Paul.

The Paul brothers shared what appeared to be a fight posted for the pair, but it ended up being a publicity stunt for their new reality TV series. Jake and Logan also had a run-in with Conor McGregor on the way to the Donald Trump inauguration, which added more fuel to the fire of one or both fighting the Irish UFC star. Still, no fight has been announced. That was until a rumor blew up the internet on Monday.

Boxing journalist julianisjulius revealed in a post on X that Jake and Canelo Alvarez verbally agreed to a fight with one another on Cinco de Mayo in 2025. The X post reads via translation, “There is already an agreement for Jake Paul to be Canelo Álvarez’s rival in May of this year, a source very close to the operation informs me. The event will be co-promoted by CaneloPromotions & MVP & PBC.”

Though there could be some truth to this, Jake has shared a date on his own X page that contradicts the above post. Jake’s post reads: It’s time Sat July 5th New York, New York The post could mean many things, and if Jake’s publicity stunt with Logan can be used as an example — the boxer could be pointing to any major activity happening on July 5. However, he could also be teasing his next fight for that date in New York. If Jake is truly teasing his next boxing match, the July 5 date would contradict the report that he is set to fight Alvarez in May. Though the months are close, that is still a major discrepancy.

For now, it appears the world will have to wait to see how Jake might fight next. Though it could be his brother Logan at some point, that will not be the case. The world assumed that McGregor would happen, but his random announcement of fighting Logan, along with the bus run in says otherwise.

What is most interesting about the rumors of an Alvarez and Jake fight is the world-renowned boxer complimented Jake recently. When being interviewed by Sports Illustrated, Alvarez admitted that Jake is “good for boxing” and that he is “good.”

Alvarez alluded to the hard training that Jake engages in. Whether or not that is enough for the pair to share the ring remains to be seen. What would make Alvarez consider fighting Jake is money. Jake has proven to be a global superstar, and his fight with Mike Tyson broke multiple records. Alvarez vs Paul would be an incredibly lucrative fight and could be true — at least according to the rumor presented on X.

Canelo Alvarez could be about to take on a shock opponent in May.

The Mexican superstar is set to face fellow pound-for-pound star Terence Crawford in Las Vegas in September, in a bout that will see ‘Bud’ jump up two weight divisions from super-welterweight to super-middleweight.

While Crawford isn’t planned to return before that meeting, it was expected that Alvarez would still compete in May, with a fight against current IBF super-middleweight champion William Scull seemingly the frontrunner.

Canelo Reportedly Set For ‘Biggest Fight In Boxing’ Before Crawford: “It Will Shock The World”

JUST IN: Ryan Garcia’s Comeback Fight Will Now Be For ‘World Title’

in a surprise twist, it has been reported by Julius Julianus that Canelo has agreed a deal to take on on the controversial Youtuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul.

“BREAKING NEWS There is already an agreement for Jake Paul to be Canelo Álvarez’s rival in May of this year, a source very close to the operation informs me. The event will be co-promoted by Canelo Promotions, MVP and PBC”

Paul last fought in November, defeating boxing legend Mike Tyson by unanimous decision in a fight that divided the sport, with many boxing fans unhappy to see ‘Iron Mike’ competing in his first professional bout for nearly two decades at the age of 58-years-old.

It was a Tyson that was firmly past his best, but if Paul is indeed set to face Canelo, the same won’t be able to be said this time around, with the Mexican superstar arguably in his prime or just a little past it.

Paul has claimed for a number of years that he will take on Alvarez one day, having previously explained why he was so confident it would take place and vowed to ‘shock the world’ when they do meet in the ring.

“This moment will prove that I’m the face of boxing, the largest attraction. Me vs. Canelo at 200 pounds for the cruiserweight championship of the world is the biggest fight, arguably even bigger than me vs. Tyson.

“It makes so much sense. Canelo is on his way out. He’s going to want a payday, and I want to show the world that all the s*** I’ve been talking about beating Canelo is actually true.

“I’ll have the biggest upset in the sport of boxing, and we will fight to really see who actually is the face of boxing because, after this event, I’m going to claim it.”

While neither team has commented on the report, it would certainly be a huge, albeit controversial, attraction. Canelo has downplayed Paul’s ability in the past.

Canelo Alvarez will reportedly take on Jake Paul in a boxing fight on Cinco de Mayo.

The pair have been linked with a fight for some time, which has largely been driven by The Problem Child. Paul has repeatedly said that his aspirations are to win a world title before eventually securing a lucrative fight with Canelo. Paul took himself a step closer to securing that mega-fight after he put on a record-breaking event against Mike Tyson in his last fight. It was the first boxing fight ever on Netflix and became the most streamed boxing event of all time.

The numbers did the talking, as 60 million households watched it across the globe. There are also reports that Jake walked away with a $40 million purse. A fight against Canelo would generate more since they are both big household names, with Canelo being one of the leading ones. Canelo also said he was open to the fight if the terms were right.

“Canelo needs me, so I’m not even going to try and call him out. He knows he wants a payday. So, he knows where the money man is at… He’s going to want a payday and I want to show the world all the [stuff] I’ve been talking about beating Canelo is true and I’ll have the biggest upset in the history of boxing. We’ll fight to really see who is the face [of boxing] because, after this event, I’m going to be claiming it,” Jake said

“When I’m done with boxing [at the highest level], why not? Yeah, maybe. I think it’s good cause what happens is other people who never watch boxing, they don’t know anything about boxing, they want to watch Jake Paul because he brings fans from another world. Maybe [I’ll take the Paul fight],” Canelo stated

Canelo is coming off a unanimous decision victory against Edgar Berlanga, which took place on Mexican Independence Weekend last year. Canelo was going up against UFC 306, which was headlined by Sean O’Malley and Merab Dvalishvili. That was the first combat sports event held at The Sphere. There was pressure on Canelo to perform, especially since fans were disappointed that he did not fight David Benavidez.

The fight produced some solid numbers. It sold 650,000 PPVs whilst bringing in a live gate of $17 million. It showed Canelo was able to produce big numbers without necessarily fighting the best names. However, neither Jake nor Canelo have officially come out to state that the fight has gone ahead. For the fight to go ahead, there would have to be several parties involved. Canelo and MVP Promotions would have to do a deal. There is also the question of which network will air the fight. Canelo has ties with PBC and DAZN, meaning there may have to be a battle between the networks. Regardless, Paul, it has resulted in many boxing fans having a say.

On Sunday, David Benavidez and David Morrell put on a clinic that will be remembered as one of the best fights of the year.

The bout lived up to the hype as the Mexican Monster edged past his Cuban opponent via a unanimous decision victory. With a score of 115-111, 115-111, and 118-108, the 30-0 boxer is now the next challenger for the winner of the February 22nd Beterbiev-Bivol rematch.

However, other than securing the undisputed titles at 175 lbs, there is one fight that David Benavidez desperately wants. The new WBA (Regular) light heavyweight and ‘Interim’ WBC light heavyweight champion, has been asking for a fight against Canelo Alvarez for years. However, even after being the top-ranked challenger in 168 lbs, Canelo didn’t seem interested.

David Benavidez Canelo Alvarez

Canelo Alvarez went as far as to demand $150 million to even consider the fight. In a recent interview with Ring Magazine, the unified 168-pound champion claimed that he rejected Benavidez’s challenge because of the disrespect their camp showed him. “I don’t like the way he approaches for taking the fight,” Canelo remarked. However, it looks like Bandera Roja is in no mood to pay heed to the suggestion, as he hit back at Canelo Alvarez during the post-match press conference.

An interviewer asked Benavidez“Do you feel like this victory would bring you closer to Canelo fight or maybe not?” With an annoyed look on his face, the Mexican Monster replied that even he has no idea and is now sick of answering the same question over and over again. “I don’t know bro. You guys keep asking me about that fight and I know as much as you guys,” exclaimed Benavidez. He “would love to fight Canelo,” given the scale of the fight but he can’t make it happen alone.

The Phoenix native mentioned how Canelo Alvarez is preparing for other fights before inserting a slight dig. “He says I’m being too mean. The way I am approaching him. I guess I am gonna work on my attitude,” stated Benavidez as the conference room erupted in laughter.

However, rather than changing his attitude, David Benavidez has a plan that will undoubtedly lure Canelo Alvarez into a fight.

Ahead of his February 1 bout, the 30-0 boxer sat down with Shannon Sharpe and Chad ‘Ochocinco’ Johnsonon the Nightcap podcast. During the conversation, the Phoenix native explained the only way that Canelo Alvarez would accept a fight with him now.

“I am going to predict the future right here. The only way I see this fight happening is me winning all the belts at light heavyweight, winning all the undisputed titles. Then me and Canelo fight at the catch weight of 172 or 173 for the 168-pound titles and the 175-pound titles,” stated Benavidez while revealing his plan.

The 28-year-old thinks that the raised stakes will make the fight “a hundred times bigger” and will entice Canelo Alvarez into accepting the fight. Given the result of the David Morrell fight, it looks like David Benavidez’s plan started off on the right note.

But at this point, it looks like the dream Mexican bout is getting farther away with each passing day. Furthermore, the Ring Magazine interview has hurt Canelo Alvarez far more than David Benavidez. It has also given the impression that the Guadalajara native is ducking David Benavidez.

David Benavidez is still hopeful of facing Canelo Alvarez one day.

Benavidez has chased a fight against Canelo for a number of years, but it has never materialised and ‘The Mexican Monster’ has since moved up to light heavyweight.

The closest that the boxing world seemed to be to getting the fight was in early 2024, when Alvarez was searching for his next opponent after his victory over Jermell Charlo.

Benavidez has now explained to All The Smoke Fight that he was approached for the clash, and revealed how much he was offered.

“I always knew I was a problem for him because I was never at the forefront when he mentioned fights. I knew one day people would ask for that fight. They offered him 70 million to fight me, that’s before pay-per-view.

“He pays the guys a flat fee, they had offered me 5 million dollars, I said cool. Sampson Lewkowicz called us before the [Jaime] Munguia fight and said would you be willing to fight a flat fee of 5 million dollars, no pay-per-view. I said yes.”

Benavidez then stated how he believes the offer may have been a ploy.

“We had agreed then we never heard back. They were calling the bait out. They wanted to see if I said yes or no. I think they thought I was going to say ‘no I’m not going to fight for 5 million dollars, this fight is worth way more.’ I called the bluff.

“I said yes and that was the last time we ever heard about that fight. This fight is inevitable, everybody is asking for it. It’s the biggest fight that can possibly be made. I’m not scared of Canelo. I feel like I can beat him.”

Benavidez returns to action this weekend when he takes on David Morrell, with a victory placing him first in line to face the winner of the undisputed rematch between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol later that month.

A Former super lightweight world champion has had their say on the upcoming mega-fight between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford.

‘Bud’ is set to challenge Canelo for his unified WBC, WBA and WBO super middleweight titles later this year, although an official announcement is yet to be made. The 37-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska faces his biggest test yet as he bids to become a five-weight world champion in what’s been a glittering career.

After months of speculation, the pound-for-pound stars have reportedly agreed to face each other in one of the biggest fights in boxing.

It has captured the attention of a number of prominent figures within the sport, including Rolly Romero, who held the WBA title at 140lbs between 2023 and 2024.

Speaking to ESNEWS, Romero made no mistake in backing the Mexican icon to prevail, claiming you would have to be ‘stupid’ to give Crawford any chance.

“Let me ask you this … Who’s a better fighter, Floyd Mayweather or Terence Crawford? … You’re gonna compare a 168lb solid grown man Canelo to fight Terence Crawford?

All the people who think Crawford would even have a single chance against Canelo, they’re f*****g stupid. It’s not even close. If anyone truly believes Crawford will beat Canelo I will bet them any amount of money. They have weight classes for a reason.”

Crawford is faced with a monumental task when he steps up to 168lbs to face Canelo, who is unbeaten in his last five outings with victories over Gennady Golovkin, Jermell Charlo and Jaime Munguia. They are due to clash this September in Las Vegas, with the Allegiant Stadium emerging as the rumoured location.
