Roy Jones Jr has spoken about Anthony Joshua‘s chances of getting revenge over Daniel Dubois.

Former two-time world champion Joshua has lost four times, one upset to Andy Ruiz which he avenged, two points losses to pound-for-pound king Oleksandr Usyk, and a shock stoppage loss to Dubois last September.

Joshua was caught early and never really recovered then rolled the dice in the mid-rounds as soon as he got close but was caught with a short right hand from the power puncher ‘DDD’ from which ended the fight.

Speaking to talkSPORTBoxing, former world champion Jones was asked for his view on the contest and started by assessing Joshua’s trainer’s advice.

“First of all, I’m not saying Ben Davison was a bad trainer, he’s a great trainer, but in that situation, I think he might have made a wrong move telling him to gamble cause gambling ain’t really the thing to do at that point, especially when the guy has hurt you once.”

He then got on to what might happen in a rematch with a different plan.

“I think Joshua can beat him if he wants to, he was in control of the fight at that point, but he got caught early. Then when he got in control he tried to close the door too fast.

“The most dangerous animal in the world is a wounded animal so I feel like the instructions should have been we’ve got him now but we can’t rush him. Take our time, we’re back in control, let’s just do this ’til we get him where we want him then we can get him out. So yes, if ‘AJ’ does the right thing, and is smart, he will beat Dubois.”

Joshua opted against an immediate rematch and has instead taken time out, with many hoping he will still be able to make an epic fight with British rival Tyson Fury, despite ‘The Gypsy King’s recent retirement announcement.

Frank Warren believes Oleksandr Usyk’s potential move to cruiserweight is ‘impossible’, which could hand Daniel Dubois a lifeline.

Usyk cemented his name in the heavyweight record books with a second consecutive win over Tyson Fury last month to retain his unified heavyweight titles.

The Ukrainian remains undefeated and is running out of challengers, which has led to his ambitious plan to move back down to cruiserweight and launch a new assault on the division.

He previously reigned as an undisputed king at the lower limit before making the leap to heavyweight in 2018, but at 37-years-old it remains unclear if he physically can cope with the demands of cutting.

Should he remain at heavyweight, IBF champion Daniel Dubois is keen to rematch Usyk, in a revenge bid after being stopped by his fellow king in 2023.

‘Dyanmite’ first has to beat Joseph Parker in a tough title defence against Joseph Parker on February 22, but Usyk has already verbally agreed to take the sequel.

And Dubois’ promoter Frank Warren now believes Usyk will stay in the division, in a huge boost to the chances of the second meeting taking place.

He told Sky Sports: “He won’t. See the size of him, it’s impossible.

“You’ve only got to look at the size of him, that’s not going to happen.

“For him, the winner of Dubois vs Parker is a big fight, a massive fight.”

Warren also expects proceedings to be much different if the pair meet again.

He added: “I genuinely still believe he would have beaten Usyk if it weren’t for what was going on in his head at the time with the referee.

“All that four-minute break. He would have jumped on him. “Was it a low blow?

“I don’t think it was a low blow, some people think it was. But the bottom line of it is four minutes when he [Usyk] wanted to fight himself and the referee said take more time.

“90 per cent of it is mental. It’s taken time. He’s had a couple of hiccups on the way but you look at the fights he’s had and what he’s done – he’s learned.

“He’s a very young guy. He’s matured mentally, which is really important. He’s got the skills.

“He’s comfortable with his trainer Don Charles, who’s done a brilliant job with him and this is his time.”

Usyk has the world at his feet, but is now 37-years-old and has nothing left to prove.

Dubois believes he does, given he dropped the champion with a controversial shot which was deemed a low blow, to his disgust.

But nonetheless he was unable to put the fight to bed and Usyk had dominated for large periods of the ring exchanges.

There aren’t many challengers left on the table for the recent undisputed king.

Jai Opetaia has also called for a high-profile clash, given he currently is viewed as the best operator in the cruiserweight division.

The Australian even intends to move up to heavyweight to pursue it, but it is unclear how long Usyk will remain active for.

Oleksandr Usyk has made his thoughts perfectly clear when it comes to a rematch against Daniel Dubois.

Usyk and Dubois met back in August 2023, with the Ukrainian claiming a ninth round stoppage victory to retain his unified heavyweight titles.

It wasn’t without controversy though, with Dubois believing he had dropped his opponent early into the bout with a body shot, only for it to be ruled as a low blow.

Since that fight, Usyk went on to become undisputed heavyweight champion after defeating Tyson Fury in May, before overcoming him again in the rematch in December.

The IBF belt wasn’t on the line for the rematch, with Usyk vacating it and Dubois himself claiming it after initially winning the interim strap against Filip Hrgovic in June.

After he was elevated to full champion, the 17-year-old defended his belt in emphatic fashion in September when he knocked out Anthony Joshua inside five rounds.

Dubois is in the form of his life, and so a potential second meeting against Usyk could certainly be an interesting encounter.

It appears the Brit feels the same way, as he stormed the ring following Usyk’s rematch win over Fury and demanded a rematch of his own.

Saudi chief Turki Alalshikh is also in favour of seeing them meet again – he included it in his list of the top five fights he wants in 2025.

Usyk has now responded at the Ring Magazine Awards – where he was awarded Fighter of the Year amongst other accolades – and needed just four words to reveal his thoughts on another showdown with Dubois.

“No problem. I’m ready.”

Before Dubois can worry about his former foe, he must first focus on defending his belt against Joseph Parker on February 22. One man who knows both fighters extremely well is Fury, and he has backed Parker – who some believe Dubois to be overlooking – to snatch the belt.

Anthony Joshua has admitted to going through “turbulent times” since losing to Daniel Dubois, while revealing his priority fight for 2025.

In September, Joshua was dropped multiple times en route to a fifth-round loss to Dubois, who retained the IBF heavyweight belt at Wembley.

Talk quickly turned to a rematch, but Dubois has since been paired with Joseph Parker, whom he will face in February. Meanwhile, a long-awaited clash between Joshua and Tyson Fury looks close again, after the latter lost to Oleksandr Usyk in December.

“2025, I am targeting Tyson Fury,” Joshua said during his meeting with Nigerian president Bola Tinubu, per multiple reports.

Of his loss to Dubois, “AJ” added: “[It] makes me hungry, makes me want to work harder. Time is of the essence, time is limited, so I just want to put in more work.

“When I look back, I believe I could have done more in 2024. I have another chance in 2025 to do more, and I am going to make sure I take every opportunity that comes my way.

“I should have won but I didn’t, and I am going to go again. My life is up and down, so I have to get used to the turbulent times and keep riding the wave. I can’t stop now. I have to keep going until I reach my destination.”

Joshua, 35, started 2024 in fine fashion, brutally knocking out Francis Ngannou in early March. But after beating the ex-UFC champion, Joshua’s fortunes changed, as he was dismantled by fellow Briton Dubois.

As a result, Joshua’s pursuit of a third world-title reign is up in the air. But a dream match with compatriot Fury would not need a title.

In late December, after Fury lost to Usyk on points for the second time in seven months, Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn said AJ wants to fight twice in 2025.

“[The first fight will be] in May or June,” Hearn told iFL TV. “He’s not in full training yet. He’s probably ready to resume training in January.

“At the moment, you’ve got the Dubois fight on 22 February, and you’ve got to see what Fury wants to do. We’re not in a terrible rush. AJ will fight twice in 2025. Once in the summer and once in the winter.

“If we can’t make the Dubois fight and if Fury doesn’t want to fight, then you have to make the decision to fight somebody, or do you wait for those fights?

“I can’t speak on behalf of AJ, for who he’s prepared to fight. But what I know is the focus is Daniel Dubois or Tyson Fury. Of course, Joshua’s done it all. If he gets Fury on his resume, he’s boxed virtually everybody of his era.”

IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois deserves a second chance at WBO, WBC, and WBA heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.

While Usyk ended the first bout between the two men in August 2023 in thunderous fashion, that victory has been overshadowed at times by a controversial incident that occurred in the 5th round of that fight. That was when Usyk was brought down by a Dubois shot that was controversially ruled a low blow. The referee then made it clear he wanted Usyk take a good amount of time for himself in order to be fully recovered before returning to the action. Suffice to say, Usyk took over three minutes before resuming the fight.

There are still those who feel that the low blow that landed on Usyk wasn’t really a low blow. On top of that, the referee’s behavior, as well as the generous amount of time it took Usyk to recover, have led to raised eyebrows regarding the fight. Naturally, more people would believe Dubois got a raw deal if Usyk hadn’t gone on to stop the man in the 9th. Had the fight gone to the cards, the mere fact that Dubois had gone to the final bell would give credence to an accusation of unfair treatment. Since Usyk sent his opponent to the canvas in both the 8th and 9th, however, Usyk’s victory became more definitive.

And now many, if not most, fans are disinterested in seeing Usyk battle Dubois again. Usyk defeated Tyson Fury for the second time last weekend, and now appears to be at the zenith of his Hall of Fame caliber career. The overall opinion seems to be that Usyk-Dubois 2 would have a been-there, done-that vibe to it. That perhaps is true, but that doesn’t mean the fight shouldn’t happen.

Besides, Dubois is the IBF heavyweight champion. If Usyk bests him again, he’ll once more be undisputed. While Usyk-Dubois 2 wouldn’t generate the interest Usyk’s fights with Fury and Anthony Joshua did, it would take away any last whiff of unfinished businesses that might still be hovering over Usyk’s reputation…provided, of course, that Usyk wins. And that Dubois bests former titlist Joseph Parker when they meet in February of the coming year. It’s good to keep in mind that Usyk is now closer to thirty than he is to forty years of age. It’s doubtful that he’ll be fighting all that much longer. Should he face Dubois again, he will have truly cleaned out the heavyweight division…unless, of course, he’s bested by Dubois.

Anthony Joshua may not engage in a risky rematch with Daniel Dubois after all, according to Saudi adviser Turki Alalshikh.

In September, Dubois dropped Joshua three times en route to a fifth-round knockout win, retaining the IBF heavyweight belt against his fellow Briton.

Talk quickly turned to a rematch of the Wembley showdown, but Dubois has since been paired with Joseph Parker, who will challenge the 27-year-old in Riyadh in February.

When Alalshikh was asked about Joshua vs Dubois 2 on Thursday, he told iFL TV: “Of course I want to see it again, but I don’t think it will happen again.”

Joshua’s other main option for his next bout is a long-awaited clash with Tyson Fury, yet – as ever – there are complications there.

Fury, who challenges Oleksandr Usyk for the unified titles on Saturday, is contracted for a trilogy fight with the Ukrainian, 37, if he emerges victorious in Riyadh.

In May, Usyk outpointed Fury in the same Saudi city to become undisputed heavyweight champion. In doing so, the former cruiserweight king stayed unbeaten and handed the Briton his first professional loss.

So, Joshua faces an uncertain 2025. The 35-year-old could face a beaten Fury, 36, if the “Gypsy King” loses to Usyk again, though “AJ” vs Fury would have lost much of its lustre in that case.

Should Parker beat Dubois in February, Joshua could angle for a title shot against the New Zealander, whom he beat on points in 2018.

Parker is now riding a five-fight win streak, having beaten Deontay Wilder and Zhilei Zhang in his last two outings. Parker, 32, defeated both men on points – Wilder in December 2023 and Zhang in March of this year.

An avenue might have opened up to allow Anthony Joshua a shot at a world title, without the former champion needing to face Daniel Dubois, Tyson Fury or Oleksandr Usyk.

Joshua, a former two-time heavyweight champion, failed to take the IBF title from Dubois in September, losing to his fellow Briton by knockout at Wembley Stadium.

“AJ”, 35, has been linked to a rematch with Dubois, 27, but the latter seems set for a title defence against Joseph Parker in February. Meanwhile, Fury and Usyk will clash for the unified belts on 21 December – seven months after Usyk outpointed the “Gypsy King”.

Usyk became undisputed champion with his win in May, but he soon vacated the IBF belt, meaning interim champion Dubois was elevated.

The Ukrainian will defend the remaining major titles against Fury, including the WBC gold, yet the organisation has agreed to sanction an interim title fight between Zhilei Zhang and Agit Kabayel. And Joshua could challenge the winner of that bout, according to WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman.

Sulaiman told Sky Sports on Monday (2 December): “The WBC has received a formal request to sanction such a fight for the interim title, and the WBC will accept to sanction it.

“Why? Because we have done everything possible for the past several years to reach the ultimate, great fights in each weight category, especially [at heavyweight].

“All this time we have been perfectly clear and transparent that the WBC will not impose any mandatory that goes against having the ultimate undisputed champion, because they’re fighting the best available.

“There’s no better fight than Usyk vs Fury, so with that fight happening and then the possibilities for the future, we have accepted the No 2 and No 3 to fight for the interim title. Keep them active, and keep the division having the best fights possible.” Kabayel is ranked second, while Zhang is actually seeded fourth – below the much-avoided Martin Bakole.

“For the winner on 21 December, there’s many options,” Sulaiman continued. “Why should anyone get in the way of a third fight? Or the fight again for undisputed [against Dubois]? Or any high-level event, while we can accommodate the champion [and have a] fight for an interim title, where the winner is going to be a high-level, sensational possibility? So, we’re all for having undisputed champions.”

Joshua is ranked sixth by the WBC, and Sulaiman, when asked whether AJ could challenge Zhang or Kabayel, said: “Absolutely. That’s an opening of possibilities for more fights to continue to take place.”

Zhang, 41, knocked out Joe Joyce twice in 2023 and dropped Joseph Parker twice in a decision loss in March. The Chinese star then bounced back in June, brutally knocking out Deontay Wilder.

Meanwhile, Kabayel is on a run of four straight knockout wins. The German, 32, most recently beat Frank Sanchez in May.

Daniel Dubois is reportedly set to make the second defence of his IBF title against Joseph Parker on February 22 instead of Anthony Joshua.

The heavyweight clash is expected to headline a stacked card in Saudi Arabia, which could include Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol’s rematch for the former’s undisputed light-heavyweight crown following their tight encounter in October.

That is according to esteemed boxing journalist Dan Rafael, who also reports that an IBF welterweight title fight between champion Jaron Ennis and challenger Vergil Ortiz is also in the works for the February bill.

Ennis recently defended the red and gold strap against Karen Chukhadzhian in a rematch last month and has been calling for the big fights to no avail.

Finally, he will face a worthy challenger in fellow undefeated fighter Ortiz, who comes in fresh off a gruelling majority decision win over Serhii Bohachuk.

Hamzah Sheeraz’s long-awaited shot at middleweight gold could also land on the bill.

Sheeraz, who is ranked highly with all four major sanctioning bodies, has chosen to go down the WBC route first and will face champion Carlos Adames next.

The fifth fight that is being explored for February is an all-action heavyweight dust-up between Agit Kabayel and Zhilei Zhang.

Kabayel is the highest-ranked heavyweight by the IBF and was slated to be Dubois’ next opponent for a time after he pulled out of a final eliminator with Martin Bakole.

Instead, he is being targeted for a fight with Zhang, while Parker is the frontrunner to box Dubois.

‘Triple D’ knocked out Joshua in September to retain his IBF belt and was in talks over an immediate sequel.

However, negotiations have since fallen by the wayside.

As a result, Dubois’ team moved on from the all-British showdown and began talking to other potential foes.

IBF president Daryl Peoples confirmed earlier this month that Dubois ‘can make an optional defence of his world title against any ranked fighter before April 22’.

Parker is not currently ranked by the IBF due to his status as a WBO ‘interim’ champion.

The Kiwi, who previously held the full WBO world title before losing it to Joshua in 2018, could give up the ‘interim’ trinket and receive a ranking from the IBF before February 22 so it is not an insurmountable hurdle to overcome.

Parker called for a fight with Dubois last month when he appeared on talkSPORT Fight Night.

“I have been very vocal about wanting to fight Daniel Dubois,” he said.

“I think he’s done exceptionally well, he done a great job against Anthony Joshua to get that devastating KO.

“He looked great versus Jarrell Miller, Filip Hrgovic and Anthony Joshua. But there’s a difference.

“I’m fresh, I’m hungry and ready to go. I’ve been waiting since March for a big fight, let’s get it on now.

“I feel like they have asked around different opponents to see which one fits, so there are a few hurdles to jump.

“But I feel like it can happen and I want it to happen, but hopefully everyone can come together and make it happen.”

After confirmation that Anthony Joshua will not rematch Daniel Dubois in February due to picking up an injury, his promoter Eddie Hearn has now revealed the specifics of the injury.

Joshua was demolished on September 21st by Dubois in front of a record Wembley crowd.

He was knocked down four times and the fight was stopped in the fifth round.

Anthony Joshua

Despite failing to join an exclusive club of heavyweights to become three-time champion, it was expected that he would have the opportunity again by rematching his opponent straight away.

However, it was revealed that he was injured and would be unable to be ready for a proposed February date.

Now his promoter Eddie Hearn, speaking to The Stomping Ground, has shed light on why Joshua cannot make this date.

“There’s no major injury. Every fighter has niggles in camp, especially when you’re a heavyweight who trains every day and spars really hard.”

“There’s nothing that’s going to be a long-term problem. For a turnaround after a five or six-week break after a defeat like that, it’s just not possible to be a hundred percent.”

“That’s all. There’s no tear in the bicep, there’s just wear-and-tear that means he cannot go into a training camp with the same intensity that he would want to.”

Eddie Hearn has said that there is no major injury to Joshua, however due to the manor of the defeat, his body needs longer to recover than it normally would.

Moreover, ‘AJ’ is 35 years old, therefore fights are likely to take more out of him than they would have a few years ago.

For Daniel Dubois, this fight solidified his status as IBF heavyweight champion after he previously was granted the title following Oleksandr Uysk being forced to vacate.

The champion is set to return to the ring in the first quarter of 2025, with the likes of Zhilei Zhang, Joseph Parker, and Martin Bakole being mentioned as potential opponents.

For Joshua, he will most likely be ready by the summer when the rematch could take place or we could finally see the greatly anticipated clash against Tyson Fury.

Anthony Joshua may choose to fight Tyson Fury next instead of rematching Daniel Dubois.

That is according to Eddie Hearn. Joshua was knocked out in the fifth round by Dubois, who retained his IBF Heavyweight Title. He suffered a one-sided beating as Joshua hit the canvas four times before the referee waved the fight off. In his post-fight comments, Joshua said he would not retire. He indicated his desire to run things back with Dubois, who was also open to the rematch. However, Joshua has to make the right move. Another defeat to Dubois will increase the narrative on him to retire.

He has already made over $200 million in the sport whilst also becoming a two-time unified heavyweight champion. But a win over Dubois makes him the IBF Heavyweight Champion and puts him in a position to fight the winner of Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk, who rematch on December 21. That would be for the Undisputed Heavyweight Championship.

But the Fury fight is also there. That is the biggest domestic fight in British boxing, which Joshua had signed for. However, Fury’s arbitration case with Deontay Wilder prevented the fight from happening, as the Gypsy King eventually went ahead with the Wilder rematch. But now Hearn has said that AJ may simply wait to face Fury.

“AJ wants revenge, but the only issue is timing. For the rematch to happen in February, training camp will have to start in a couple of weeks. There are always niggles, and he had a few, so physically, it’s just a case of whether AJ is ready to do that. It would be frustrating if we made the Dubois rematch and Fury won [the Usyk rematch]. Then we’re sitting there going, ‘Hang on a minute, we’re fighting Dubois, but we could have fought Fury in May for the biggest fight in boxing,” Hearn said

Nevertheless, that depends on several factors. If Fury beats Usyk, that could set up the narrative for a trilogy fight. The Gypsy King narrowly lost a split decision in the first bout. While most of the boxing community felt that Usyk won a unanimous decision, it showed that Fury could hang in there with the Ukrainian until the end of the fight. Joshua would also have to depart from what he usually does.

When he lost against Andy Ruiz Jr. on his American debut in Madison Square Garden, Joshua had the rematch immediately. He outboxed Ruiz and beat him to win a unanimous decision. When Joshua lost the Usyk fight, he immediately took the rematch. Although he came out second best again, it showed that Joshua has a tendency to try and avenge his losses. The failure to do that against Dubois may suggest he no longer feels he can cut it at the elite level. The motivation may simply be to get as much money as possible before retiring. Joshua has plenty to ponder.
