Will former undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez ever fight interim WBC super middleweight champion and his mandatory opponent David Benavidez?

Former CEO of Mayweather Promotion Leonard Ellerbe has shared his thoughts on the potential fight as he spoke about Canelo’s upcoming skirmish.

‘Cinnomen’ is about to get in the ring against his WBA mandatory Edgar Berlanga on September 14th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. While the event is expected to do good numbers, the fight that people really want has been pushed down on Canelo’s priority list with demands of $200 million. However, Ellerbe feels that the fight is inevitable.

Speaking to the 58-year-old in an interview, Marcos Villegas from Fight Hub TV asked for Ellerbe’s expertise in the business to predict when the fight may go down. So, in response, Ellerbe, who has been on Floyd Mayweather’s side for the better part of his career, seemed optimistic, claiming the fight would happen sooner or later because of the demand for it.

“I just think that you know, it’s a fight that the entire sport wants to see, you know. Two of the guys at the top of their game and the fans want to see that fight, and I think they will get it at some point next year. That’s just my opinion,” Ellerbe said. And guess what? It’s worth noting that Canelo hasn’t said no to the bout, right?

Instead, he’s asking for a ton of money to make the fight happen, basically saying he’s earned the right to make those demands with everything he’s done in his career. Meanwhile, later in the interview, Ellerbe went as far as to defend Canelo’s demand for $200 million, stating, “There’s never enough money when you’re getting up there and putting your life on the line. I support his decision to do it whenever he’s ready to do it.”

But not everyone thinks Canelo’s just in it for the cash—some people actually believe he’s just scared.

So, get this. Oscar De La Hoya‘s been taking shots at Canelo Alvarez for asking for $200 million to fight David Benavidez, saying it’s just Canelo’s way of dodging the fight. De La Hoya, who used to promote Canelo with Golden Boy, vented about it in an interview with Sean Zittel. He said, “Canelo not wanting to fight Benavidez and outpricing himself—even Turki knows that Canelo is afraid of Benavidez.”

He also threw in, “200 million dollars? You’re crazy. You are crazy. In other words, you don’t want to fight him.” It doesn’t end there. The one and only De La Hoya made it clear that he thinks Canelo’s asking price is way too high and bad for the sport. And that’s not all, folks. He stressed that a fight between Canelo and Benavidez would be huge for boxing, saying, “Boxing is on the rise… and if Canelo fights Benavidez, guess what, that’s the Super Bowl of boxing.”

Alright, will this fight happen? It’s unlikely that Canelo Alvarez would let this mega money-making opportunity just pass him by. However, whether he gets paid $200 million for it is yet to be seen. At least, Leonard Ellerbe feels Canelo deserves every dollar.

Fans have slammed the PPV price for Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga, which has been priced at $89.99

The fight takes place on September 14 during Mexican Independence Weekend. Canelo is the massive favorite as he defends his WBA, WBC and WBO belts against the 22-0 Berlanga. Alvarez enters the fight with wins over Jermell Charlo and Jamie Munguia. The fights received a mixed reaction, with fans unhappy that Canelo did not box David Benavidez. And yet, the PPV prices were still fairly high.

The Charlo fight was priced at $84.99. The Munguia fight went further at $89.99. This was more than Errol Spence Jr. vs Terence Crawford’s fight at $84.99 and the Gervonta Davis vs Ryan Garcia fight, which was also at $84.99. Those fights were bigger from a title perspective but also on a global scale. Canelo has been accused of taking easier fights for bigger paydays by avoiding the best.

“I know how he feels after losing to Bivol, so he’s been looking for easier fights ever since. Also, I’m not the one who’s afraid of fighting Benavidez or Crawford. Therefore, I knew he was wasting our time and making excuses with big amounts of money that can’t be paid. So I’m continuing my way to make big fights that serve the boxing world, and he’s on his way to making easy show-only fights,” Turki stated

The undercard for the event is also not helping the cause. Caleb Plant faces Trevor McCumby. Plant lost to David Benavidez last year and may not be the same fighter. His opponent is now well known despite his 28-0 record. Plant is his biggest test, meaning fans may not get a competitive fight. Rolando Romero also faces Trevor McCumby. Romero was stopped by Isaac Cruz in his last fight, showing that he had declined since his Gervonta Davis loss. Danny Garcia will also box Eridlandy Lara.

That is seen as a credible match up. However, Garcia has not boxed since 2022 when he beat Jose Benavidez Jr. As for Lara, he stopped Michael Zerafa in March, making him the favorite. Oscar De La Hoyahas previously said that fans will boycott Canelo fights because fans are not getting the best bouts. His Berlanga fight competes with the UFC 304 event at The Sphere, whereSean O’Malley headlines against Merab Dvalishvili. Since that is The Sphere’s first combat sports event, Canelo faces a tough task.

“The September 14th fight has been made – Canelo Alvarez-Edgar Berlanga. A fight that nobody asked for. Fans are now starting to boycott Canelo for continuing to duck you know who. Also, they’re going up against the UFC at The Sphere? Good luck with making a splash with that one,” De La Hoya stated 

Despite the criticism, Canelo’s last fight sold over 500,000 PPV buys. If Canelo can get something similar, he will take it. He will fancy his chances since the fight is against a Puerto Rican on Mexican Independence Weekend.

Canelo Alvarez vs David Benavidez is undoubtedly one of the most hotly anticipated fights in boxing right now.

Fans are clambering to see the pair square off for super-middleweight supremacy yet Canelo has shown little urgency in getting the fight over the line.

The Mexican superstar previously suggested he would require an extortionate purse of $200million (£158m) for him to duke it out with ‘The Monster’.

Benavidez’s promoter Sampson Lewkowicz insisted they did everything to make the fight happen in May, while his client was Canelo’s WBC mandatory at 168lbs.

But Canelo chose to face Jaime Munguia on Cinco de Mayo weekend instead.

After growing tired of waiting, Benavidez moved up to light-heavyweight and defeated Oleksandr Gvozdyk in June for the WBC ‘interim’ trinket.

The victory made him mandatory for the winner of Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol’s four-belt shootout on October 12.

A clash with Canelo now looks to be out of reach but many members of the boxing fraternity hold out hope.

Former IBF super-lightweight champion Paulie Malignaggi is not one of them though.

“I don’t care who Canelo fights if he would vacate the titles,” Malignaggi told talkSPORT’s talkBOXING podcast.

“Personally, I’ve been saying this for two years, I think David Benavidez runs him over like a train running over a car that’s stuck in the train tracks.

“I stick with that. His apprehension to fight the mandatory continuously only cements my opinion.

“I don’t think he’s gonna fight Benavidez, the only reason I wanna see him fight Benavidez is for the belts because I don’t even think it would be a good fight. I’m more excited about other things than I am about Canelo.”

For now, Canelo is set to take on Edgar Berlanga on September 14 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Providing he comes through that unscathed a super fight with Terence Crawford remains a possibility.

However, Malignaggi is even less interested in that prospect.

“I’m not crazy about it [the Terence Crawford fight],” he added. “I think Canelo is looking for easy pickings. Easy pickings later in his career.

“The fact he’s been allowed to avoid his mandatory for three years is absolutely appalling. The sanctioning bodies should be ashamed of themselves, absolutely disgraceful.

“But I think he would possibly consider Crawford, but he wants a crazy amount of money. Because he sees the kind of money Turki Alalshikh pays, and I think he’s trying to take advantage of it which has rightfully offended Turki Alalshikh.

“I’m not crazy about the fight, I think weight classes exist for a reason. Crawford has been amazing, his talent has been something that has overcome the weight class deficit, but at a certain point, you’re gonna start to see that.

“The Crawford vs Israil Madrimov fight was right there. I don’t understand why there’s this talk about Crawford and Canelo. I think if anything that fight right there should tell you he’s not able to go up that many more weight classes.

“He really had to test himself in that fight. That fight came down to the last couple of rounds if you ask me.

“Madrimov is good, you have a 154lbs division that is very, very good. I can also see why Crawford would just want to take on Canelo because Canelo is like him, he’s made a lot of money already and it’s sort of like a Hollywood type of fight where big names and brands in boxing just fight each other.

“If you fight these young, hungry guys, you’re gonna end up being really tested against guys who the world is not gonna give you credit for beating, like Madrimov. That weight class is difficult.”

Alvarez doubted that. He expressed the same when he sat down for an interview with ‘Million Dollaz Worth of Game’. Drawing parallels with the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Mike Tyson, he pointed out that all the superstars fought, whom they thought were better for their business and resume, not for holding onto their championships after they had cemented their hold on the top. The Guadalajara native said, “[Oscar] De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather, Julio Cesar Chavez, Mike Tyson, everybody did this. There are stars and superstars, and they made the championship, not the championship made them.”

“The IBF [says], ‘Hey, you need to fight with this because this.’ Who’s [William] Scull? I never hear about him… I’m not gonna do whatever they want, I want to do what I want. In this position, I can do whatever I want. Because I deserve it, because of all I did,” Alvarez added.

While he is one of the biggest stars in the boxing world, he will go against the Noche UFC on the same weekend, as both events share the same date. But he has confidence in his fan base, his fame, and his name.

In the same interview, Alvarez shed light on sharing the same night as Noche UFC, which will happen a few blocks away from his fight in T-Mobile Arena. The UFC has booked the Sphere and has already spent $17 million on the promotion. But the super middleweight champion is undeterred. He declared, “Maybe other boxing matches, maybe, but Canelo is different. There are other kind of fights, but Canelo is just different. I don’t care if the UFC is there, when Canelo fights, it’s different.”

It remains to be seen how well Alvarez’s fight with Edgar Berlanga fares on the business side of things. The fans have asked questions about his decision to fight Berlanga, but he looks to cash in on the Mexico vs. Puerto Rico rivalry to make the event successful. Will his plan be successful?

He had been devoid of the same at 168 because Alvarez, 34, never ceded to the fans’ demand. The latter also tossed Benavidez’s WBC’s interim title mandate into the bin. With Alvarez, at 61-2-2, now trying to attract eyeballs for his September fight, he might struggle a bit. That’s what the American fighter believes.

In a conversation with ‘2ToneDaSupastar,’ Benavidez, at 29-0, expressed his candid view of Alvarez vs. Berlanga. Not only did he slander the fight but also threw a shade on the Mexican champion. He said, “It’s a trash-a*s fight. Nobody wants to see that. But at the end of the day, Canelo doesn’t face the strongest opposition.”

After the IBF stripped Alvarez of one of his titles at 168, the fight has already received a jolt. The fight tries to bank on the Mexico-Puerto Rico rivalry to sell tickets to the MGM Arena, but if some are to believe, Alvarez missed the trick by not fighting Benavidez. The fans were curious to witness how the Guadalajara native would have fared against a power puncher in Benavidez. However, now that the ship has sailed, the Phoenix native is focused on his light-heavyweight journey. But he does hold a grudge against Alvarez for not giving him the biggest fight of his career.

In the same conversation, Benavidez shed light on being mandatory for Alvarez, which the WBC never enforced against the super middleweight champion. Speaking with a tone of discontent, the orthodox boxer said, “I have been his mandatory for the last three years. I can’t force a man to fight me. It shouldn’t even come to a position where you have to activate your mandatory. What’s the interim title for? That’s basically activating your mandatory… At the end of the day, I gotta move forward with my career.”

Benavidez is now next in line to face the winner of Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol, where all the straps of 175 will be on the line. He might have to wait for a while, as Beterbiev vs. Bivol has a rematch clause. So you can expect Beanvidez to finally realize his ambition of fighting for the undisputed crown somewhere in the first quarter of 2025.
