He will not be an easy opponent as many believe, some think that Canelo’s reign may come to an end on the most important day for him. But I think it will be one of the best performances of the Mexican, since he has not been pushed, according to boxing fans. The titles at stake will be the super middleweights of the WBA, WBC and WBO.

Saul arrives with a record of 60-2-2, with 39 KO’s. His last fight date was on 5-04-2024 against Jaime Munguía, winning and retaining his championships. Against Jermell Charlo he also retained. Against Jhon Ryder he also retained again. With Golovkin, he won again. His most recent defeat was to Dmitri Bivol for the WBA light heavyweight title, losing the fight on 5-07-2022.

The challenger Edgar Berlanga comes to this fight with a record of 22-0-0. With 17 KO’s. The Puerto Rican current WBO NABO super middleweight champion since 2021, remains undefeated. His most successful defense was against Steve Rolls, winning on the judges’ cards.

First Round

Canelo starts to throw the first right-handers. Berlanga protects his guard. The Mexican doesn’t take any risks in this first round.

Second Round

The second fight started, Berlanga started attacking hard. Canelo resisted and looked for the first contacts on the right. The Puerto Rican waited a long time for the Mexican. But both seemed to be wearing themselves out.

Third round

The Mexican knocked the Puerto Rican to the ground. Canelo threw several left blows and tried to finish him off, but Berlanga remained strong and resisted in the campaign that saved him.

Round 4

Berlanga has become more motivated and he went after Canelo. He was calm for the Mexican. Saul did not risk much to go for the fight. Few blows up and down.

Fifth round

The round got heated. Berlanga finished and hit Canelo. Saul held on at short distance. The Mexican showed long and short right hands. The Puerto Rican is saved again.

Sixth round

Canelo finds a better way to victory. He doesn’t take risks and keeps moving forward. He looks for short right hands to the center. He also goes to the corner.

Seventh round

Berlanga fell. He couldn’t hold on for long and the referee lifted him up and the fight went on. He said the fight was on for round 8. Canelo continues to dominate.

Eighth round

The Mexican continues to improve and looks for Berlanga at close range. With a right hook above the face. The man from Guadalajara has everything to win and the Puerto Rican continues to resist Saúl’s blows.

Ninth round

Canelo held his own against Berlanga. He did not despair in looking for the blows that would send the Puerto Rican to the ground. Canelo looked for the right hands in the lower part. We entered the last rounds.

Tenth round

Canelo hugged Berlanga. Waiting for the rounds to end. Saul Alvarez looked for the lower part and the fight was in the center of the ring. Both are already looking tired. Edgar closed better with a final blow.

11 round

Penultimate round. Canelo held out against Berlanaga for a long time. The Puerto Rican refuses to fall into Saul’s game. He takes breaks from the big blows he had in the first encounters. The last round comes and Canelo lands the final blow in the corner.

12 round

Canelo appears to be tiring just like Berlanga. But the last goals were quite key. They could not finalize the fight and Saul Alvarez will be the one in charge of winning the title.

Canelo Alvarez has revealed who he wants to fight next after he defeated Edgar Berlanga to retain his WBC, WBA and WBO super-middleweight titles.

The two men were fighting at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, with Alvarez dropping Berlanga on his way to a wide unanimous decision win.

Canelo was in control throughout the bout, and dropped Berlanga in round three after a left hook. The Puerto Rican showed great heart throughout the contest though, displaying that he would not give up.

Despite his bravery, Alvarez remained dominant, with the fight going the distance and the judges scoring it 118-109, 118-109 and 117-110 in the Mexican’s favour, who was pleased with his victory.

“I did good. Now what are they gonna say? They said I don’t fight young fighters. They always talk, but I’m the best fighter in the world.

“I got a little angry with his tactics, but I’m Mexican man. It means a lot to fight on this day. It’s an honor to represent my country on this day.

“My experience and my talent was the difference. It’s about hard work and intelligence. It’s everything together. If you have talent, you need discipline as well.

“A lot of people say we can’t, but we can. Las Vegas is like a second home for Mexicans. We are warriors and we never give up. I’m going to rest and then I’m going to decide what’s next.”

In terms of what is next, Canelo shocked many over the weekend when he revealed that he is targeting a rematch with Dmitry Bivol, provided he comes out on top in his undisputed title fight with Artur Beterbiev next month.

Bivol defeated Canelo back in May 2022, claiming a close unanimous decision win to deny the Mexican the chance to win the WBA light-heavyweight title.

As for Berlanga, the loss to Alvarez was the first defeat of his professional career, and he acknowledged how difficult it was going against the pound-for-pound great.

“I’m upset because at the end of the day I’m a winner. I fought a legend tonight and did my best to represent Puerto Rico. We’re fighters and we try to throw our opponent off their game.

“I took his best shot and I knew I could take his punches and return them. I could have jabbed a lot more, but I was in there with a legend.”

Elsewhere on the Canelo card, Erislandy Lara claimed a ninth round retirement win over Danny Garcia to retain his WBA middleweight title, and Caleb Plant stopped Trevor McCumby in the ninth round to win to win the interim WBA super-middleweight title.

There was also a dominant unanimous decision win for Rolly Romero against Manuel Jaimes, while Stephen Fulton recovered from a fifth round knockdown to defeat Carlos Castro by split decision.

Canelo Alvarez, boxing’s top star, retained his unified super middleweight championship with a unanimous decision victory over Edgar Berlanga on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena.

Alvarez floored Berlanga with a monstrous left hook in Round 3 — his money punch — and prevailed via scores of 117-110, 118-109 and 118-109. ESPN scored it a 120-107 shutout.

This was the fifth consecutive decision victory for Alvarez, who hasn’t scored a knockout win since he defeated Caleb Plant in November 2021. It’s also the fourth consecutive bout where Alvarez scored a knockdown.

“Now what are they gonna say?” Alvarez, 34, said during his postfight interview. “I fight younger fighters. They say I fight older fighters. They always talk. … My experience, my talent, my hard work, my intelligence, everything together [makes me the best]. If you have talent but you don’t have discipline, you have nothing.”

Alvarez, ESPN’s No. 5 pound-for-pound boxer, is an all-time great. Berlanga, meanwhile, was fighting on the world-class level for the first time. Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) was a -1600 favorite, per ESPN BET, and a -250 favorite to earn the win inside the distance.

However, Berlanga (22-1, 17 KOs) rarely threw a power punch, clearly wary of presenting a counter-punching opportunity for one of the sport’s best at capitalizing on such openings. Following the knockdown, as Berlanga sat on the canvas and banged his gloves together, he entered survival mode.

Alvarez pressed forward and tried to close distance as Berlanga pumped his jab from out of range. And while Berlanga was rugged on the inside and showed some toughness, he clearly wasn’t willing to sell out and risk becoming a knockout victim.

“I’m upset,” Berlanga said. “I fought a legend tonight. Hopefully this is the start today of me becoming a future legend. … I took his best shot, I believe, in the third round.”

The Brooklynite of Puerto Rico heritage began his career with 16 first-round KOs, but as he stepped up in competition, his power dissipated. Berlanga, 27, entered his first title shot on the heels of a sixth-round knockout victory over Padraig McCrory in February.

Alvarez, naturally, is several levels above such an opponent, and his wealth of experience showed. He was the far more comfortable fighter, though he was frustrated on occasion by Berlanga’s roughhouse tactics, as referee Harvey Dock warned the pair numerous times.

“Fighters like to throw each other off their games,” Berlanga said.

Alvarez was once again headlining on Mexican Independence Day Weekend, one of two boxing holidays reserved for the sport’s top attraction. And he wasn’t ready to discuss whom he wants to face when he eventually returns on Cinco De Mayo Weekend.

In the lead-up to the bout, Alvarez told ESPN on Wednesday he was interested in a rematch with Dmitry Bivol, who defeated him in May 2022 at 175 pounds. That’s provided Bivol beats Artur Beterbiev for the undisputed light heavyweight championship Oct. 12 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Another option was ringside: Terence Crawford, the future Hall of Famer who remains undefeated. He made his 154-pound debut last month with a win over Israil Madrimov and told ESPN on Thursday he’d like to fight Alvarez at the full-fledged 168-pound limit with no rehydration clause.

“I think it would tell the No. 1 guy of this era in the post-Mayweather era, who’s the king of kings,” Crawford said.

Whomever Alvarez fights next, he’ll still be in search of his first knockout victory since November 2021, though he hasn’t lost many rounds in the process.

Said Alvarez: “I’m the best fighter in the world.”

“Yeah, if it’s possible one day, it’s the only fight I make one more time at 175 with that rematch with Bivol,” Alvarez told both Usman and Cejudo. “I think it’s the only fight I will [move] up and fight with him.”

Prior to that loss in being drowned out by Bivol’s volume punching, Alvarez had knocked out Sergey Kovalev to win the light heavyweight world championship in November 2019, showing he is capable of winning at that weight.

But how does Alvarez expect Bivol (23-0, 12 KOs) to fare against a battering Beterbiev who counts all 20 of his victories by knockout?

“I think if Bivol has the condition and the very good game plan to go there in and out and do all these things, I think he wins,” Alvarez said. “But if not, if he goes a little bit in the corner or in the ropes, it’s going to be hard for him because Beterbiev is a very hard fighter.”

Canelo Alvarez is preparing to clash with Edgar Berlanga on Sept. 14 in Las Vegas, and the latter is well-known for his trash talk. At the same time, Berlanga hasn’t held back with his criticism of the Mexican icon.

However, Berlanga hasn’t genuinely gotten under Alvarez’s skin. The future Hall-of-Famer named the former opponent who most of all irked him, and it was Billy Joe Saunders. Premier Boxing Champions posted the clip for an interview with Alvarez, and he explained the bad blood between him and Saunders.

Alvarez scored an eighth-round TKO victory over Saunders when the latter couldn’t answer the bell for the ninth round during their May 2021 unification clash. Alvarez came into the fight as the WBC super middleweight champion and took Saunders’ WBO title in the win.

Alvarez would capture the IBF crown by defeating Caleb Plant six months later. “Some fighters they talk to sell the fight or themselves, but him, I think he’s a bad person and I really enjoy beating that guy,” Alvarez said. The two men had a memorable and seemingly personal faceoff during the pre-fight buildup.

Saunders may have been trying to sell the fight and himself, but in Alvarez’s eyes, things went a little too far. Alvarez appeared to take great pleasure in torturing Saunders throughout the eight rounds. Saunders took such a beating, suffering a fractured orbital bone, that he hasn’t fought since.

Saunders hasn’t officially retired, but with more than three years since his last fight, it seems he might be done competing as a professional boxer. Alvarez has fought six times since the meeting with Saunders, going 5-1.

His only loss came via unanimous decision vs. Dmitry Bivol in May 2022. The fight with Berlanga is the next chapter of the Mexican-Puerto Rican boxing rivalry.

Despite Alvarez being a clear favorite, the event still figures to draw a crowd because of Alvarez’s star power and the fight’s cultural connections.

Fans have slammed the PPV price for Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga, which has been priced at $89.99

The fight takes place on September 14 during Mexican Independence Weekend. Canelo is the massive favorite as he defends his WBA, WBC and WBO belts against the 22-0 Berlanga. Alvarez enters the fight with wins over Jermell Charlo and Jamie Munguia. The fights received a mixed reaction, with fans unhappy that Canelo did not box David Benavidez. And yet, the PPV prices were still fairly high.

The Charlo fight was priced at $84.99. The Munguia fight went further at $89.99. This was more than Errol Spence Jr. vs Terence Crawford’s fight at $84.99 and the Gervonta Davis vs Ryan Garcia fight, which was also at $84.99. Those fights were bigger from a title perspective but also on a global scale. Canelo has been accused of taking easier fights for bigger paydays by avoiding the best.

The undercard for the event is also not helping the cause. Caleb Plant faces Trevor McCumby. Plant lost to David Benavidez last year and may not be the same fighter. His opponent is now well known despite his 28-0 record. Plant is his biggest test, meaning fans may not get a competitive fight. Rolando Romero also faces Trevor McCumby. Romero was stopped by Isaac Cruz in his last fight, showing that he had declined since his Gervonta Davis loss. Danny Garcia will also box Eridlandy Lara.

That is seen as a credible match up. However, Garcia has not boxed since 2022 when he beat Jose Benavidez Jr. As for Lara, he stopped Michael Zerafa in March, making him the favorite. Oscar De La Hoyahas previously said that fans will boycott Canelo fights because fans are not getting the best bouts. His Berlanga fight competes with the UFC 304 event at The Sphere, whereSean O’Malley headlines against Merab Dvalishvili. Since that is The Sphere’s first combat sports event, Canelo faces a tough task.

“The September 14th fight has been made – Canelo Alvarez-Edgar Berlanga. A fight that nobody asked for. Fans are now starting to boycott Canelo for continuing to duck you know who. Also, they’re going up against the UFC at The Sphere? Good luck with making a splash with that one,” De La Hoya stated 

Despite the criticism, Canelo’s last fight sold over 500,000 PPV buys. If Canelo can get something similar, he will take it. He will fancy his chances since the fight is against a Puerto Rican on Mexican Independence Weekend.

Paulie Malignaggi has called on Canelo Alvarezto vacate his super middleweight titles. 

Malignaggi made the comments after Canelo chose not to box his then-WBC mandatory David Benavidez. Canelo was undisputed then but chose to vacate his IBF belt after being ordered to face William Scull. He now has the WBA, WBC and WBO belts, which he will defend against Edgar Berlanga on September 14 during Mexican Independence Weekend.

The fight has received mass criticism since a Benavidez fight would have gone down well on the date to decide the best Mexican of this era. Benavidez will now box at 175, ending hopes of that fight.
There are other alternatives Canelo could have taken instead to reduce the criticism towards him. There are fights with Christian Mbilli and David Morrell Jr.

Mbilli is 28-0, with 23 KOs and has come off a win against Sergiy Derevyanchenko. Before this fight, he called out Canelo and expressed his desire to face the best after beating Derevyanchenko. Morrell Jr. is also another option. The Cuban is a knockout artist with an 11-0 record and nine KOs. The failure to face big names is seen as holding up the division, leaving Malignaggi unhappy.

“I don’t care who Canelo fights if he would vacate his [168-lb] titles. I’ve been saying this for two years. I think Benavidez runs him over like a train, like a car stuck on the train tracks. His [Canelo] apprehension to fight his mandatory continuously only further cements my opinion of that. I don’t think he’s going to fight Benavidez. The only reason I want him to fight Benavidez is for the belts because I don’t even think it would be a good fight,” Malignaggi said 

Malignaggi was also critical of a potential Terence Crawford fight. Crawford has been chasing Canelo for some time, even calling him out after his win over Israil Madrimov. The win made Bud the WBA champion at 154 in his first fight at the weight class. However, Crawford’s punch power at the weight class was not what it was at 147 when he stopped all his opponents.

Madrimov also tagged Crawford numerous times, landing more power punches. There is a feeling that Crawford would bite off more than he can chew if he moved up to 168. Jermell Charlo did the same, coming up from 154 to face Alvarez last year. He was not the same fighter as Canelo, who won a comfortable unanimous decision. Malignaggi felt Canelo was simply looking for bigger paydays.

“I’m not crazy about it. Canelo is looking for easy pickings for later in his career..I think he would possibly consider Crawford, but he wants a crazy amount of money. He [Canelo] sees the kind of money Turki Alalshikh pays, and he’s trying to take advantage of it, which rightfully offended Turki Alalshikh. I’m not crazy about it. Weight classes exist for a reason. Crawford has been amazing. His talent has been something that has overcome the weight class deficit, but at a certain, you start to see that,” Malignaggi stated

‘I’ll be king forever’: Edgar Berlanga on a win over Canelo Alvarez

Edgar Berlanga may laud what Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has accomplished, but he says all respect will go out the window when the two meet on Sept. 14 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

This isn’t to say that Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) is underestimating the Mexican superstar ahead of their super middleweight unification bout. But unlike prior opponents Jaime Munguia and Jermell Charlo, whom Berlanga believes were too reverent of the super middleweight king, Berlanga says he’s coming to win.

That much was apparent when the war of words began during a recent press tour to announce their Mexican Independence Day Weekend headliner, with things heating up in Los Angeles. While Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) promised an emphatic eighth-round knockout win, Berlanga, 27, vowed to utilize his ring IQ to upset the Mexican superstar.

“I saw a maricón,” Berlanga said of their heated face-off. “And he knows he didn’t see no fear [in me]. He knows he saw himself. You know how Tony Montana says in the movie ‘Scarface,’ the eyes never lie? You never saw me looking around. I looked straight, right into his soul. I saw everything in his body. When I went to L.A. and he had 100 guys with him, and it was only five of us, I kept that same energy in his face. I don’t fear any man at all.”

Berlanga is leaving no stone unturned in his preparation for Alvarez, moving camp from New York to Colorado. The Brooklyn-born Boricua says he began training well before the fight was announced and has only increased the intensity since.

“This is the first time being away this far from home, logging and being in the mountains and stuff,” Berlanga told BoxingScene. “I just wanted to put in a little bit more. We’re facing a legend, he’s in the mountains, so that’s why I wanted to be in the mountains.

“We’re not going to find a guy that fights just like Canelo, but we got guys in the gym that have experience, the same height, that are strong and come forward and that also sort of mimic the things that he does in the ring. That’s the type of sparring [trainer Mark Farrait] is bringing in. We’re not bringing in guys who don’t listen. They got to follow what we want to do – what Canelo is going to be doing on Sept. 14.”

Berlanga has also re-enlisted the help of strength and conditioning coach Ángel “Memo” Heredia.

“This is our second fight together. He’s a great strength and conditioning coach,” said Berlanga. “He’s a great human being, too. We brought him on board my last fight. He definitely came in and helped us with a lot of strength and fine-tuned a lot of other things for my performance. I need to be explosive. It’s going well, man.”

Even so, Canelo remains a significant favorite to retain his unified 168-pound belts. Berlanga says that while Canelo is great, he isn’t invincible – and at age 34, with 65 pro fights, he is past his best.

“The jab is his kryptonite, and that’s what’s going to be in his face the whole night. A great jab,” Berlanga said. “He loads up on his punches too much. He’s not the old Canelo we saw at 154, the one who used to throw a lot of combinations. Now, the maximum number of punches he throws is maybe two – jab and a right hook, double jab and uppercut. But he’s throwing them hard because he wants to beat up on your shoulders and your arms so that later on you let your guard down and he starts hitting your face. He likes to throw a lot of good body shots as well. We’re ready for that.”

Alvarez is a significant step up for Berlanga. After winning his first 16 bouts via first-round KO, Berlanga went the distance in his subsequent five bouts before scoring a sixth-round KO over Padraig McCrory last February. A win over a legend would not only be a huge upset but perhaps the greatest win for Puerto Rico in its rivalry with Mexico.

“I’ll be a legend after I beat Canelo,” Berlanga declared. “I’ll be the king of Puerto Rico forever. Me having my first title shot for three belts versus a guy that was an undisputed Mexican legend. He’s a superstar, so if I beat him, it’s over, man. We got to walk through him on Sept. 14. I got to break his will.”

Days following his epic win over the Mancunian saw him vacate the IBF title, thus making his undisputed championship one of the shortest in boxing history. Like many, Usyk too found himself in a corner boxed by a poser on the Crawford-Alvarez puzzle. The P4P number-one boxer, however, knew the answer. Ever since it reached the ears of the fans, discussion on the subject has become more rigorous.

However, concerns over the sheer weight gap always raised alarm and concern across the board.

Clearly, there was no unanimity among fans over a clear winner. To some, the super middleweight champion would remain unscathed. But then a few believe the Nebraskan southpaw has the wherewithal to usurp the throne. Let’s check what a few others had to say about the ambitious lineup.
