Former Multi-weight World Champion Didn’t Hesitate When Asked If Anthony Joshua Can Ever Become World Champion Again

Roy Jones Jr has spoken about whether or not he thinks Anthony Joshua can reclaim a world title before the end of his career.

Joshua is one of the most decorated heavyweights of his generation. He is a former Olympic gold medalist who started racking up knockout wins as soon as he turned over. By 2015 he was British champion after knocking out Dillian Whyte, and then he stopped Charles Martin to pick up his first world title.

He added further belts with a victory over Wladimir Klitschko. A second unification with Joseph Parker saw him go the distance for the first time in his career, but the prize was to add the third of the four major world titles to his collection.

He lost all those belts in 2019 to Andy Ruiz but won them back six months later in the rematch, then lost again to Oleksandr Usyk in 2021, and failed to regain the belts in a return fight in 2022.

Although he rebuilt with more impressive KO wins, he lost in his attempt to become a three-time world champion when he was stopped inside five rounds by IBF ruler Daniel Dubois back in September.

Speaking to Covers, former multi-weight world champion Jones Jr suggested things would have been different had he coached ‘AJ.’

“Of course things would have been different if I had the chance to work with (Joshua), but you can’t blame people for their opinion and the way they do things. I feel bad the way they thought about me working with him, I know what I could have helped him out with and how much I could have changed him but I can’t change what doesn’t want to be changed.”

Asked about his future, Jones Jr still backed the Brit to get back to the top.

“It’s still possible he becomes a world champion, he still has the heart, he’s still got the athletic ability, so I think he could.”

Right now Joshua has no fight scheduled but many hope Tyson Fury will come out of retirement and the pair will have a legacy-defining showdown to settle their long feud once and for all.

As for becoming champion again, the only current options to do that are Dubois and Usyk, neither of which ‘AJ’ would step through the ropes as a favourite.

Roy Jones Jr has spoken about Anthony Joshua‘s chances of getting revenge over Daniel Dubois.

Former two-time world champion Joshua has lost four times, one upset to Andy Ruiz which he avenged, two points losses to pound-for-pound king Oleksandr Usyk, and a shock stoppage loss to Dubois last September.

Joshua was caught early and never really recovered then rolled the dice in the mid-rounds as soon as he got close but was caught with a short right hand from the power puncher ‘DDD’ from which ended the fight.

Speaking to talkSPORTBoxing, former world champion Jones was asked for his view on the contest and started by assessing Joshua’s trainer’s advice.

“First of all, I’m not saying Ben Davison was a bad trainer, he’s a great trainer, but in that situation, I think he might have made a wrong move telling him to gamble cause gambling ain’t really the thing to do at that point, especially when the guy has hurt you once.”

He then got on to what might happen in a rematch with a different plan.

“I think Joshua can beat him if he wants to, he was in control of the fight at that point, but he got caught early. Then when he got in control he tried to close the door too fast.

“The most dangerous animal in the world is a wounded animal so I feel like the instructions should have been we’ve got him now but we can’t rush him. Take our time, we’re back in control, let’s just do this ’til we get him where we want him then we can get him out. So yes, if ‘AJ’ does the right thing, and is smart, he will beat Dubois.”

Joshua opted against an immediate rematch and has instead taken time out, with many hoping he will still be able to make an epic fight with British rival Tyson Fury, despite ‘The Gypsy King’s recent retirement announcement.

Jones Jr. explained that while he respects Mayweather’s undefeated record, he believes other boxers have had more impressive careers. “You got to respect anything a person does to stay undefeated that long. I respect it to a degree, yeah.Is it a 50-0 that I think he’s the greatest fighter of all time? Nah. [Julio César] Chávez went 80-0 at one point. 80. You gonna ever top that? No. He just didn’t stop. [Floyd] got to 50-0 and stopped because of Rocky Marciano. Rocky died. If he wouldn’t have died, he probably would’ve kept going too,” Jones Jr. noted.

Jones Jr. also criticized Mayweather’s choice of Conor McGregor as his final opponent. “And then, at the end, you fight a guy who’s 0-0. How can I respect that? Conor McGregor was 0-0 and they let you do that?So what pisses me off is I’ve had fights that I’ve tried to promote in Vegas at that time with that same commission. They wouldn’t let a 13-5 guy fight with a 13-0 guy, but you would let an 0-0 fight a 49-0? That shows you that it’s all about the money.”

While both Mayweather and Jones Jr. are undisputed legends, their contrasting perspectives highlight the complexities of determining the GOAT in boxing. Mayweather’s perfect record and commercial dominance contrast with Jones Jr.’s admiration for fighters like Chávez, whose sheer volume of victories remains unparalleled.
