After winning the first Grand Slam title of her career Serena Williams received a special message.

The American produced one of the most iconic and influential careers not just in tennis but all of sport.

For nearly three decades the 43-year-old produced greatness on the court and broke various records on the way to becoming an all-time great,

At the start of her journey to become a sporting legend Serena Williams received a special phone call after her first triumph at Flushing Meadows 25 years ago.

Williams won the first of her 23 Grand Slam titles at the 1999 US Open, when she was just 17 years of age.

She defeated Grand Slam champions Kim Clijsters, Conchita Martínez, Monica Seles, and Lindsay Davenport, before beating top seed Martina Hingis 6-3, 7-6(4) in the final.

By winning the doubles tournament with Venus Williams, Serena became just the fifth woman in the Open Era to win both singles and doubles at the same Grand Slam.

Following her achievement, Williams recalled when she received a special phone call from none other than the President at the time, Bill Clinton.

“It was very exciting,” she said. “I thought for sure my day couldn’t get any better. Next thing I knew, someone was telling me, ‘The President of the United States wants to talk.’ I was thinking, ‘Wow.’

“He said that they had watched my last three matches and they were really rooting for me, him and Chelsea also. I talked to her also, she’s really nice (laughter).

“She said she’ll show me around Stanford when I go there for Fed Cup if I wanted to. Pretty exciting.” Williams also visited the White House along with Andre Agassi, to meet President Clinton after they both won the 1999 US Open.

President Clinton has attended the US Open and watched Williams in action both in 2013 when she won the title, and in 2022, the final event of her illustrious career. In the past he praised the athlete, her game and what she means to the younger generation.

“She always wanted to be someone who opened up new avenues for girls and women and she was able to play highly competitive, high concentration tennis, win but always be concerned about why she was really doing it,” Clinton told BBC Radio Five Live back in 2013.

Throughout her illustrious career, Williams won the US Open, her home Grand Slam, on six occasions.

Following her first trophy in 1999, Williams emerged victorious again in 2002, defeating her sister Venus in the final.

Her next US Open win did not come until 2008, before another four years and Serena claimed her fourth title in New York, winning a thrilling final against Victoria Azarenka.

Williams went on to claim three titles in a row as she clinched the 2013 and 2014 championships, once again defeating Azarenka before dispatching Caroline Wozniacki.

The American came close on other occasions to winning the title, first by reaching the semi-finals in 2015 and 2020, before finishing runner-up in 2018 and 2019 to Naomi Osaka and Bianca Andreescu respectively.

Serena Williams was one of the most dominant stars tennis has ever seen, winning 23 Grand Slam titles during her career.

There aren’t many stars who can say that they had a career on the WTA Tour as impressive as Williams.

Surpassing Steffi Graff’s record of Grand Slam wins was once seen as impossible, but the American did so in style, always impressing whenever she stepped onto the court.

JUST IN: Serena Williams Fans Worry She’s ‘Losing a Lot of Weight’ as She Flaunts Slimmed-Down Figure

After 27 years in the sport, she retired in 2022, and Williams recently revealed whether she misses playing tennis.

Williams’ career was full of big wins and dominant displays, but things didn’t quite go to plan for her back in September 2015.

Roberta Vinci: The woman who ended Serena Williams’ 26-match unbeaten run at the US Open

Williams was the dominant force on the WTA Tour in 2015, having won the first three Grand Slams of the year.

She seemed a favorite to complete the illusive Calendar Grand Slam, as she entered her semi-final match at the US Open against Roberta Vinci with a 26-match winning streak at the event.

The American had won the tournament in 2012, 2013, and 2014, and it seemed inevitable that she would take home her fourth consecutive title in 2015.

Things started well for Williams, who took the first set 6-2 against her unseeded opponent, before things quickly unravelled.

Serena Williams is looking trimmer than ever these days—and fans think they know the reason why.

Commenters on the legendary athlete’s most recent Instagram posts noted the 43-year-old mother-of-two’s noticeably slimmer frame, with many speculating that a medication like Ozempic might have had something to do with her weight loss.

In a video posted earlier this week, Williams danced for the camera wearing a short black tennis dress and neon green shorts, showing off her toned legs.

While some fans applauded her “slight twerk” and “sashay,” others couldn’t get over her appearance.

“That Ozempic weight loss medicine ain’t no joke,” wrote one person.

“Ozempic?” asked another.

“Poor baby, What happened,” a third commenter wanted to know.

Fans similarly reacted to another pair of photos shared on Instagram which showed Williams snuggled under a blanket on a plane, even though she was snacking on what appeared to be a sandwich in one of the pics.

“She losing a lot a weight?” one social media user asked.

Others came to the tennis icon’s defense, however.

“nothing wrong with that…everyone is trying to lose weight. I lost 34lbs so far. Not a bad thing. Happy for her,” shared someone else.

Williams has been open about her weight loss journey since welcoming her second daughter, Adira River, with her husband, Alexis Ohanian, in August 2023. They also share a 7-year-old daughter, Olympia.

In May, Williams shared a video of herself trying on a denim skirt that she’d been hoping to fit into for some time.

“I am going to try on my skirt again to see if it’s any closer than it was four weeks ago. Really it’s been about six weeks. Honestly, I feel like it’s gonna fit the same because I’ve been gym-ing a lot but I don’t know if the needle is moving,” she said in the clip, adding, “I wanna cry, but I’m not. I’m gonna stop eating all those snacks,” she joked.

Serena Williams is embracing the holiday spirit early with a memorable family trip to Disney Park.

Since retiring in 2022, the 23-time Grand Slam champion has stayed busy with her business ventures and investments but recently took a well-deserved break to spend quality time with her loved ones.

Williams shared glimpses of the trip on Instagram, showcasing the joy of the outing with her husband, Alexis Ohanian, their daughter Olympia, her sister Venus Williams, their mother Oracene Price, and close family friends.

One photo captured the group posing in front of the park’s iconic scenery, while another showed Serena and Venus sharing a special moment together. Serena and Alexis also enjoyed a lively show, with Serena captioning the post.

“There’s nothing like a quick family trip to @disneyparks. There’s no place like Disney,” Williams wrote.

The Disney trip offered a rare opportunity for the Williams sisters to reconnect with their mother, Oracene Price. As a central figure in Serena and Venus’s incredible journey to tennis stardom, Price played a crucial role in shaping their success.

While much attention has been given to their father, Richard Williams, as their coach and strategist, Serena has often highlighted her mother’s invaluable contributions to their careers.

Reflecting on her parents’ complementary roles, Serena explained the dynamic.

“If you have to take a human body, my dad was a body and my mom was a spine. That’s how important she was to our family and my career,” she added.

WhileRichard handled the physical aspects of training, Price focused on building their mental toughness, helping the sisters develop the resilience needed to excel in one of the most demanding sports.

Price’s unwavering support was a constant throughout their careers, as she often cheered from the stands during pivotal matches. Her guidance not only shaped Serena and Venus’s approach to tennis but also influenced their overall outlook on life.

As the holiday season draws near, this family outing reflects Serena’s focus on cherishing meaningful moments with loved ones. It also serves as a reminder of the strong foundation that propelled Serena to legendary status, a legacy that continues to inspire.

Serena Williams believes sister Venus would have won a lot more Grand Slams had their careers not overlapped.

Tennis great Serena ended her playing career with 23 majors – the most won by a woman in the Open Era – while sister Venus sits on eight with the 44-year-old insisting she has not retired despite playing only two matches in 2024.

They faced each other 16 times in singles at Grand Slams from 1998 until 2022 and Serena edged that stat 11-5. Nine of their meetings at the majors came in finals with Serena winning that H2H 7-2.

After Venus won their first-ever major final at the 2001 US Open, Serena then won five consecutive Slam finals (two at Wimbledon and one each at the other majors).

Serena believes Venus would have won double-digit Grand Slams while she herself would have had 30 had the Williams sisters not played against each other at the four Slams.

“We had this rule that if we played against each other before the final, we had to win the title. I think Venus would have had a minimum of 15 Grand Slams if we didn’t play. I would have had 30,” Williams said at The New York Times’ DealBook Summit.

The Williams sisters changed the face of tennis as they broke barriers and dominated the sport with also both reaching No 1 in the WTA Rankings while they are also No 1 and No 2 in the WTA all-time career prize money earnings list.

Overall, they met 31 times in top-level tennis with Serena winning the head-to-head 19-12 with the last of their matches coming in 2020 with the 23-time Grand Slam winner emerging victorious.

With the timeline of their careers roughly the same, it meant they went through a lot of battles together and while they had their ups and downs, their close relationship was also key to their success.

“There was no separation at all. Looking back, I don’t know how we dealt with that. We were so close, we grew up so close. My family was like, ‘No fighting, you girls are always going to be sisters and that’s that,’” the 43-year-old Serena said.

The American added: “But we actually lived together until I got married, which wasn’t that long ago. We just always lived together. I think that helped our relationship.

“We had to figure out a way to work it out. We had to communicate, you know, we had to have those difficult conversations. I think we just, without even realising it, leaned into that. As long as I was winning.”

Serena Williams is living her best life.

The retired tennis star, 43, debuted a new, slimmer look while at an event in Miami on Saturday, Dec. 7, and showed it off in an Instagram video of her dancing while wearing athletic attire.

In the clip set to Bad Bunny’s song “DÁKITI,” Williams could be seen shaking her hips and dancing. She wore a black Nike tennis dress with bright green shorts underneath and matching green tennis shoes, with her blonde hair in light waves.

“Today was the @wyn activation in Miami with @meta and you ladies pulled through!,” she wrote in the video’s caption. “So nice to meet so many new faces and can’t wait to see what you all look like in #WYN!”

Several fans commented on her post praising her new look, noting that she “slayed” the look and appeared “stunning.” One fan wrote, “Looking amazing. Time to get u back on the court.”

Another person commented, “She is feeling it! Serena William is in the zone… Good for her!” Another fan chimed in saying, “She got that makeup right and looking great!! 🙌🏽💐.”

The post comes after the former tennis pro revealed that she traded in her tennis rackets for running shoes as she focused on building stamina in order to run a half-marathon. The 23-time Grand Slam champion told PEOPLE last month that she planned to run the race by the end of 2025.

“That’s my new goal,” Williams told PEOPLE. “So it’s just like I have to do something competitive. I miss tennis like crazy.”

Williams — who shares daughters Olympia, 7, and Adira, 1, with her husband of seven years, Alexis Ohanian — also shared that she is making greater efforts to take care of her body after competing in tennis for decades.

“I’ve gotten obsessed, more obsessed with diet and exercise, I think, than when I was playing tennis,” she. “I knew that I was going to burn 20,000 calories a day, and now I’m like, ‘Oh my god, I don’t know how many calories I’m going to be able to burn!’ ”

However, she also noted that keeping up the healthy habits wasn’t just for herself, but for her kids, so that she could continue to keep up with them.

“The more that I don’t play sports professionally, the more that I think, ‘Okay, this is what I’ve done for literally my entire life, and how do I optimize and keep it up?’ As a mom, my main goal is to be healthy for my kids and I have young kids and I need to be able to run for them and be able to do all that stuff,” she added.

“Now it’s about finding balance and doing other things I’ve always loved,” Serena Williams said earlier this year while reflecting on the missed opportunities in life due to a prolonged tennis career.

The 23-time Grand Slam winner and former world no.1 hanged up the racket in 2022. Since then, she has time and again expressed her longing for moments she couldn’t have because of her profession. Even something as small as a sleepover was hard to come by. She revealed it in a new social media appearance.

Serena Williams took to TikTok to post a video of herself getting ready. She was in New York where she was invited as a guest to speak at the NYT’s annual DealBook summit on December 4. Before her session, Williams thought of getting candid with her fans and shared some crucial anecdotes from her life. Especially the ones related to her career that never really allowed her to enjoy ‘normal’ things. Yes, she achieved a lot professionally. But, she also had to make personal adjustments in order to focus on her career. Such as not having a sleepover. “My girls always say that I am not normal and I didn’t get a normal life. So last night we had a sleepover and I’ve never really had a sleepover,” she began.

Furthermore, she mentioned the very reason why she didn’t really feel like going for a sleepover to a friend’s house. Mentioning her great bond with her sisters, she said, “Well I had sisters all the time so I guess I didn’t need a sleepover. But well I guess I slept over every night. But so, we all stayed in my room and it was fun, it was a lot of fun.” Adding on to being unable to have ‘normal moments’, she said, “I started playing tennis like at literally 3 years old and then, I don’t know I’ve just always been playing.” She confessed that it’s not easy to have a consistent, smooth professional career without making compromises in your life. “You have to make a lot of sacrifices,” she said. Interestingly, though, it’s not the first time Serena has mentioned how difficult it’s been for her to maintain balance between her professional and personal life.

Serena played her last match at the 2022 US open and said goodbye to a phenomenal career, gilded with 73 titles and four Olympic golds. In an interview earlier this year, she mentioned that it wasn’t an easy decision to retire. However, it was also crucial in order to be normal again. And to enjoy her personal moments with family and loved ones. “It’s definitely not easy,” she said while moving away from tennis.

Adding further, she said, “I love sports and being active. Leaving something I was still good at to be a mom was such a difficult decision. But I wanted another kid, so I had to do that. Now it’s about finding balance and doing other things I’ve always loved.” Probably that’s the reason why the former World No.1 eventually had a realization to hang up her racket and embrace motherhood. With that, she’s trying to enjoy all the tiny moments she missed out on during her stint on the court.

These days, Serena Williams can be seen spending most of her time with daughters Olympia and Adira, and husband Alexis Ohanian. On social media, she keeps sharing precious moments from their family time on weekends. Now that she’s off the court, she really seems to be extremely happy with her new life as a loving mother and a wife.

Serena Williams is no stranger to the spotlight.

Even after retiring, she continues to make waves both on and off the court. But this time, it’s not her athletic brilliance or entrepreneurial success making headlines. Instead, it’s a more personal matter that has sparked conversations: a discussion about her skin tone. Yes, you read that right. Williams, who has always championed confidence and self-love, found herself in the middle of a controversy when her skin tone became a topic of debate. But in true style, the 23-time Grand Slam champion wasn’t about to let the chatter take center stage for long.

In a surprising development for the former American sensation, she was surrounded by the allegations of bleaching her skin. It started towards the end of November after Williams took her to her social media to share a fun clip with her husband, Alexis Ohanian. Soon, several users took to X claiming the tennis great used a bleaching procedure, meaning she used products or treatments to lighten her skin. However, Williams did not let this rumor swirl around for long.

The 43-year-old participated in an Instagram live for her make-up brand WYN and engaged with fans over her make-up routine and practices. She used the video to clearly lash out at her critics and clarify that she has not gone through any such procedure. “For you haters out there, I do not bleach my skin,” she said adding “I am calling you out on this because it is ridiculous that everyone is like ‘Oh she bleaches skin.’ Continuing further, Williams expressed her pride in being a black woman sharing how the shade of her skin makes no difference for her.

I am a dark black woman and I love who I am and I love how I look. That’s not just my thing and people do it that’s their thing when they have every opportunity. I don’t judge. But you guys do. But that’s what this world is about and I stay in my lane, the non-judgy one and I keep it,” she shared. Reiterating her stance, she said, “But no, I actually don’t bleach my skin so can we just kinda clear that up?” Interestingly, this is not the first time when Williams has faced such allegations.

In 2021, Serena Williams posted a picture on her Instagram account, where her face looked a little too bright. Soon, many users jumped to the conclusion that the American tennis player had bleached her skin without considering elements like light that could have impacted the picture. Similar accusations took place in August this year with fans claiming her to have used external procedures to brighten her skin tone. However, Williams took a veiled jibe back then as well.

Sharing a picture donning a denim jacket and jeans, Williams captioned it, “100% real … forehead to toe … lol,” which was directly linked to the allegations she faced. And indeed! For a player who expressed pride in being a black athlete throughout her career, witnessing such accusations can be quite surprising at times. In fact, Serena Williams once motivated young black girls and budding athletes to get inspired by her and admire their own beauty.

Serena Williams did not just enter a sport that was once considered to be dominated by white athletes, but completely ruled it for years. The 23 Grand Slams she amassed besides the Olympic Gold Medal highlight her success and determination irrespective of all the challenges she faced. And now, Williams only wishes to inspire more such black people to take pride in what they do while she herself expresses pride in her skin tone.

In an interview with Time Magazine in 2022, Williams said, “A lot of people feel they’re not pretty or they’re not cute enough because their skin is dark.” Dismissing such beliefs, she added, “I think people could feel my confidence, because I was always told, ‘You look great. Be Black and be proud’.” Continuing further she added, “Giving them that confidence, that motivation, is something that has literally never been doneYou don’t let the world decide beauty.

Alexis Ohanian is getting real about a recent health scare. The Reddit cofounder who shares two children with tennis great Serena Williams, posted a selfie of himself lying in a hospital bed.

“After tracking some suspicious nodules on my thyroid for the last 4 years, I recently got half of it surgically removed,” Ohanian posted on Instagram Thursday (Nov. 28).

The tech entrepreneur shared that the nodules may have become cancerous and went on about his family’s history with the disease.

“The nodules were getting bigger & the latest biopsy revealed they’d very likely turn cancerous, he shared. “My mom had breast cancer around this age (41) and then ultimately died from brain cancer a decade or so later. I hate cancer.”

He continued: “I wasn’t gonna take any chances; the surgery was smooth and I’m extra grateful this Thanksgiving because I got the call this morning that my now-removed-half-of-thyroid was indeed full of some gnarly nodules that were very likely to become cancerous.”

After the surgery, he told fans what he’d miss the most while he recovers.

“The worst part tbh has been not being able to lift for 2 weeks but big fella will be back at it next week and I took my girls to Disney World this week so life is wonderful,” he wrote.

Lastly, he wrote a call to action for all the men who are reading the post.

“To my fellow, men — make those doctor’s appointments — especially if y’all are dads,” he concluded as he wished everyone a happy holiday. “Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.”

Last month, Williams shared that she had a massive cyst on her neck that she had to get removed.

@serena

Back in May I found a lump showing on my neck. I immediately went to the doc got a mri and was told I have a brachial cyst. Have you ever heard of that? They said I don’t need to get it removed if I don’t want. So I did not get it but it kept growing. I decided to get more test and 3 test and one biopsy later everything is still negative but doctors advised I get it removed asap because it was the size of a small grapefruit and it could get infected or worse leak. So this is me removing it. I am feelimg so grateful, and fortunate everything worked out, and most of all I’m healthy. I still made it to American doll with Olympia as promised. And yes all is ok. 🙏🏿🙏🏿 #fyp #foryourpage #serenawilliams #mom

Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian revealed he recently underwent surgery to remove ‘suspicious nodules’ in his thyroid that were likely to become cancerous.

The 41-year-old Reddit co-founder shared the news on Instagram this Thanksgiving, posting a hospital photo alongside adorable snapshots of 7-year-old daughter Olympia and 15-month daughter Adira, whom he shares with the tennis superstar.

‘After tracking some suspicious nodules on my thyroid for the last 4 years, I recently had half of it surgically removed,’ Ohanian explained.

‘The nodules were getting bigger, and the latest biopsy showed they were very likely to turn cancerous. My mom had breast cancer around this age (41), and then ultimately passed away from brain cancer a decade or so later. I hate cancer.’

He went on to express his gratitude, noting that the surgery went smoothly.

‘I wasn’t gonna take any chances. I’m extra grateful this Thanksgiving because I got the call this morning confirming that the half of my thyroid that was removed was indeed full of some gnarly nodules that were very likely to become cancerous.’

While he joked about missing his usual lifting routine for two weeks, Ohanian shared an optimistic update.

‘The worst part, to be honest, has been not being able to lift for 2 weeks. But big fella will be back at it next week. Took my girls to Disney World this week, so life is wonderful.’

He ended his post with a reminder to other men: ‘To my fellow dads — make those doctor’s appointments. Especially if y’all are dads. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.’

In July, Ohanian says he has received a diagnosis of Lyme disease, which came as a bit of a shock to him.

He explained his health situation in a series of posts on X/Twitter Tuesday, saying that doctors told him about the diagnosis after he underwent multiple medical procedures.

‘Doing a full battery of health scans, tests, etc, and found out I have lyme disease,’ said the tech entrepreneur, who is father to two children with the tennis icon. ‘Wild. No symptoms, thankfully, but gonna treat.’

Ohanian explained some of the intricate details behind his diagnosis: ‘Good cholesterol is too low. Bad cholesterol is just OK. Gotta work on that. On the plus-side: 822 ng/dL total + 162 ng/dL free testosterone.’

Ohanian said that while he has a family history linked to the ailment, he was caught off-guard by the diagnosis since he did not fall into the group that is typically exposed to the condition geographically.

‘I’ve got a loved one who had it a few years back, showed tons symptoms etc and just couldn’t figure it out until they tested him for it and then found it (treated it successfully, too),’ Ohanian said. ‘I spend so little time in the wilderness/northeast this was quite a surprise.’

Ohanian said he was ‘gonna grab some antibiotics’ to combat the ailment, adding, ‘Can’t keep me down, tick!’ with a picture of The Tick cartoon character.

Ohanian stressed to his 563,700 followers on the platform that he was in no way dispensing health advice to the masses in regard to Lyme disease: ‘Please talk to a doctor!’ he said. ‘Do not listen to me for any health advice!’

The Mayo Clinic describes Lyme disease as ‘an illness caused by borrelia bacteria,’ adding that ‘humans usually get Lyme disease from the bite of a tick carrying the bacteria.’

The clinic noted that while ‘ticks that can carry borrelia bacteria live throughout most of the United States,’ the ailment ‘is most common in the upper Midwest and the northeastern and mid-Atlantic states’ domestically, and ‘also common in Europe and in south central and southeastern Canada.’

People are at higher risk if they ‘spend time where the ticks live, such as grassy, brushy or wooded areas,’ and the best means of prevention ‘is to avoid tick bites when you are outdoors.’

The CDC said that ‘476,000 people may be diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease each year in the United States,’ adding that the total consists of people who are ‘treated based on clinical suspicion but do not actually have Lyme disease.’

The governmental agency said that most cases ‘can be treated with 10-14 days of antibiotics,’ and that doing so in the ‘early stages’ of the disease leads to a rapid and complete recovery.

The disease has been a controversial topic at times, with a January 2023 report from the American Medical Association stating that ‘a lack of evidence-based guidance for how to care for people experiencing persistent symptoms and growing misinformation makes treatment challenging.’

Ohanian is one of a number of prominent names who have publicly emerged about their health battles with Lyme disease.

Others include Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum Yolanda Hadid and her daughter, model Bella Hadid, both of whom have been outspoken about their respective battles with the ailment.

Bella last year said that she had undergone 100 days of treatment amid a battle with the condition that stretched nearly 15 years.

Musical artist Justin Bieber in January of 2020 said that doctors had diagnosed him with Lyme disease after being at the receiving end of nasty remarks about his appearance.

‘While a lot of people kept saying Justin Bieber looks like s***, on meth etc. they failed to realize I’ve been recently diagnosed with Lyme disease, not only that but had a serious case of chronic mono which affected my, skin, brain function, energy, and overall health,’ the Grammy-winning artist said on Instagram.

Actor Ben Stiller told The Hollywood Reporter in 2011 that he’d been diagnosed with the ailment in 2010.

‘I got it in Nantucket, Massachusetts, a couple of years ago,’ Stiller told the outlet. ‘My knee became inflamed and they couldn’t figure out what it was, then they found out it was Lyme. I’m symptom-free now, but Lyme doesn’t ever leave your system. It’s a really tough thing.’
