Former American tennis star Serena Williams has paid tribute to Rafael Nadal with a touching video after the 22-time Grand Slam champion retired from professional tennis.

A 92-time tour-level champion Nadal, who spent 209 weeks at No. 1 in the ATP Rankings, wrapped up his glittering two-decade-long tennis career with a loss in his country’s Davis Cup quarterfinal tie against the Netherlands. He retired as second in the men’s standings for most Grand Slam titles with 22 majors, of which record 14 he won on clay court of Roland Garros.

Serena, who herself is a 23-time Grand Slam winner, posted a video on Instagram in which she can be seen donning a Nadal t-shirt and his signature headband to say farewell to the Spanish great.

Williams, who appeared alongside Nadal at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, later posted on X,

After the match, in a video compilation, sports stars including David Beckham, Iker Casillas, Andres Iniesta, Andy Murray congratulated him on his incredible career.

“Your tenacity, fighting spirit, and the infectious energy you brought to the court will be studied and will inspire countless future generations. I’ve been privileged to call you my rival,” said Serbian great Novak Djokovic, who shared obe of all-time great rivalries with Nadal.

“The tennis world, and indeed the sporting world, will profoundly miss the incredible energy you brought to the game. There”s so much to celebrate and cherish around your legacy,” he added.

Murray added, “The passion and intensity you played with was something I think all tennis players aspire to, and what all tennis fans will remember you for. It has been incredible watching you.”

Injury has impacted the last few years of Nadal’s career though, and he has not played a tour-level match since the Paris Olympic Games in August, where he lost in the second round to his long-time on-court rival Novak Djokovic. Due to injuries continuing to affect his body, he has only been able to play 19 matches this season.

With the Billie Jean King Cup Finals and Davis Cup Finals sharing a site in Malaga, the top ATP and WTA names who are involved mingle amongst each other and that was the case with Emma Raducanu as well as Carlos Alcaraz.

Raducanu is currently playing against Rebecca Marino in the first singles rubber of the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Quarter-Finals and is as of time of writing 4-0 up. Leylah Fernandez faces off against Katie Boulter in the second singles match afterwards but it seems that Raducanu is putting the country in the box seat.
She also looked happy as she was throwing an american football with her team with a jovial Carlos Alcaraz watching on. But as a social media user pointed out, it does nothing but add fuel to the fictional stories that circulate online. He was bizarrely asked at Wimbledon after the final about Raducanu attending.

“I don’t know, I don’t know. I think a lot of people came to see the final,’ he said. ‘I think Novak and I always put on a good game, a show on the court. I think it is a beautiful game to watch.
“And she is from here, so I imagine that she wanted to come and see it. If there was a Grand Slam in Murcia [his home town] I would 100 per cent go to the final, even if I wasn’t playing. I don’t know if she came to the finals or if she came to see me. Who knows? You have to ask her, but I hope she enjoyed the final.”
Often in the past social media users in the tennis space have created fake quotes about Alcaraz saying he is in a relationship with Raducanu that often fool others. They have occasionally gone viral and also saw Raducanu barraged with comments about when her and Carlos are going public.
With this image now circulating, social media was very much fearing another situation similar to this. After his ATP Finals ended amid illness and a swift exit in Round Robin, Alcaraz now has more pressure. He faces Netherlands with Spain in the Davis Cup Finals in Rafael Nadal’s farewell.

Venus Williams is no stranger to smashing records and stereotypes. Alongside her iconic sister, Serena Williams, the Williams duo didn’t just play tennis—they transformed it.

They became global household names, inspiring countless budding players to dream big and push boundaries. But even after reshaping the sport and achieving legendary status, Venus has revealed that people still doubt their skills, confronting lingering misconceptions about their greatness.

The 44-year-old engaged in an interaction with American Artist Titus Kaphar for the Cultured Magazine as the two deliberated on several factors related to their lives and career growth over the years. In the interview, Kaphar highlighted the dominant rule of Venus and lauded her skills. “You all perfected it. Now people are looking at your game and trying to decipher and take it apart,” the painter noted. However, Williams was quick to present a different and astonishing claim.

Williams also claimed that many in the community still doubt her and Serena’s prowess. “Maybe they still think it was a fluke, Serena and I. Otherwise they would be copying every single thing. Lots of things did change, but there are certain concepts that they didn’t understand,” she said. However, she exuded her satisfaction over the fact that all the concepts about their lives and skills were not emulated by others.

Which is fine, because if your opponents aren’t taking that from you, then you’re the only one that has it,” the star player added. This claim is indeed interesting given the accolades that both sisters have amassed throughout their lives. Remember, while Venus has won 7 Grand Slams, her younger sister has 23 such titles under her belt. Besides, both sisters have won Olympic Gold medals in 2000, and 2012, respectively. Interestingly, Venus’ statement comes despite the praises that the sisters have received from several players in the past.

Remember, American youngster Coco Gauff has often highlighted how Venus and Serena helped her mold herself. Speaking about the sisters, Gauff said, “I had mentioned that I play tennis but nobody cared. But I feel like for me, having role models like Serena and Venus to look up to made a difference,” she said. “Honestly, I just remember watching Venus at the US Open. My dad got second-row tickets and we were so close and that was a cool thing,” she added. Similar reactions also came from Swiss player Celine Naef, who despite beating Venus in the 2023 Libemma Open, did not fail to laud her dominance.

She’s an amazing player and really a role model for anyone. For me, it was the biggest stage I ever played,” she said. However, Venus’ latest remark reveals that there are always two sides to a coin, and despite the praise that the sisters have witnessed, their skills were considered to be a fluke by many.

But irrespective of the sometimes negative comments Venus Williams has witnessed from the community, she has always enjoyed the support of her sister Serena Williams which is also one of the reasons why she has continued to delay her retirement despite not playing enough on the courts.

Venus Williams has struggled to make a dominant comeback on the courts for quite some time now. This year, the seven-time Grand Slam champion has participated in only two events: the Indian Wells Masters and the Miami Open, where she experienced early exits. While these situations have caused many to deliberate on her retirement, Venus has reflected that she is encouraged to continue playing the sport by her young sister.

In a video on her YouTube channel in January this year, Venus highlighted the Serena Williams factor which keeps her going. “My little sister, Serena, told me I’m not allowed to quit, and of course, I would never quit. But it’s the mandate. She said no, so I will be back on the court.” In fact, Williams also claimed that retiring from the sport before turning 50, is out of question for her.

For now, what remains to be seen is whether Venus Williams will shed more light on who she believes continues to doubt her and her sister’s legacy. While she hasn’t called out anyone specifically, such revelations could certainly add more weight to her statements and spark further discussions.

The retired tennis star and the Reddit co-founder married in 2017 and have since welcomed two daughters together

Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian are celebrating seven years of marriage!

On Saturday, Nov. 16, the retired tennis star, 43, and the Reddit co-founder, 41, each shared heartfelt social media posts to mark their latest wedding anniversary.

Williams’ Instagram post featured photos of her family’s costume party from several days prior. Ohanian and their 7-year-old daughter Olympia were dressed as Roman gladiators, while Williams and 15-month-old daughter Adira sported colorful looks. Another photo showed the tech executive kissing Adira on the head as he held her, and yet another captured the family of four posing together with big smiles.

“7 years has gone so fast… Happy anniversary @alexisohanian. Thank you for being the best dad to our girls @olympiaohanian and @adiraohanian,” Williams wrote. “Thanks for also making average November day a costume party and making it special. ❤️❣️.”

Celebrating Williams’ role as a mom, Ohanian commented on her post: “❤️ Thank you for blessing me with the two best humans we ever met.”

In his own Instagram post, Ohanian reflected on the couple’s 2017 New Orleans nuptials.

“7 years ago today, we got married here,” he wrote. “Now we get to bring these two for beignets. Happy Anniversary 🎉.”

“You’re an amazing mama. I’m very lucky to have met you @serenawilliams @olympiaohanian @adiraohanian,” he added, alongside a snapshot of the family members all together, seemingly hanging in New Orleans.

The couple — who first met in May 2015 after they were seated next to each other at an event ahead of the Italian Open — tied the knot in 2017 at New Orleans’ Contemporary Arts Center in front of a slew of celebrity guests including Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian, Eva Longoria and fellow tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.

Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian's Relationship Timeline

Williams and Ohanian have been candid about their romance since then, including sharing how they keep their relationship fresh as they parent their two daughters and work together on a number of business ventures.

Back in 2021, Williams opened up about her relationship with the venture capitalist, admitting in an interview on The Question Game that “marriage is not bliss, but it can be if you work at it.”

The 23-time Grand Slam winner also revealed that motherhood was always a goal for her, saying, “I always knew I wanted kids. I never knew when but I always knew I wanted kids at some point.”

“I learned that love is an amazing feeling. And if you have an opportunity to feel it, then it’s a special thing,” she added.

Earlier this year, the couple had a hilarious viral moment as they were walking along the red carpet at the opening ceremony for the 2024 Paris Olympics. In several videos and photos, Ohanian could be seen standing behind his wife and older daughter, carrying an umbrella to protect them from the pouring rain.

A commentator for Eurosport deemed Ohanian the tennis star’s “umbrella holder,” not realizing he was Williams’ husband.

“[Serena] looks absolutely incredible. She’s got someone just behind us holding an umbrella,” the commentator said. “Those are the levels you aspire to. To have an actual umbrella holder behind you.”

Ohanian immediately got in on the joke, sharing a post from X that read: “TV commentator: ‘Serena Williams even has her own personal umbrella holder’. FYI… the ‘umbrella holder’ ’is Alexis Ohanian, her husband. He’s one of the founders of Reddit. 💀.”

In his own Instagram post with a photo of the viral moment, the tech founder joked: “I’m also Olympia’s personal umbrella holder.”

SERENA Williams has revealed that she won’t step on the scales anymore.

The tennis icon, 43, retired from the sport after the 2022 U.S. Open.

Williams is widely regarded as the greatest female tennis player of all time, having won 23 majors in singles during her glittering career.

During her playing days, she spoke of body image expectations faced by women in sports.

And earlier this week, she revealed on X that she doesn’t even bother to weigh herself anymore.

“I can’t take anymore negativity and lies,” her post began.

“And that’s why I won’t get on scales anymore. . . Can you relate?”

Williams took a break from tennis in 2017 as she became a mom.

She gave birth to daughter Olympia, now seven, in September of that year.

The former world No1 later returned to the sport, reaching several more major finals as a mother.

Williams likes to use her social media platform to preach positivity among her followers.

Last month she wrote on X, “Before you go to bed tonight look yourself in the mirror and say ‘you are gorgeous. You are beautiful and you are loved’. Love ya.”

She later added, “The success of every woman should be the inspiration to another. . .”

In 2014, Williams discussed body image as a female athlete during an interview.

“When I was young I thought I should be built more like an athlete – long and lean – not with a womanly figure,” she told Fitness Magazine.

“Unless I’m eating really healthy, I feel that way almost every other week.

“I feel as if I can do better and be smaller, which I think is just a natural thing for women to feel.

“We’re taught that we have to look a certain way.”

Williams won the U.S Open six times during her playing days.

So it was fitting that the final event of her career was played at Flushing Meadows.

Having announced her upcoming retirement in Vogue, Williams defeated Danka Kovinic in round one on a packed, star-studded Arthur Ashe Stadium.

She then upset second seed Anett Kontaveit in round two, before falling to Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic in the final match of her storied career.

Serena Williams remains a beacon of inspiration, even two years after her retirement from tennis.

While her impressive achievements in the sport are well-known, it’s her candidness about personal struggles that resonates with many. From navigating motherhood to maintaining her fitness, she shares her journey with authenticity. Her Instagram posts often radiate positivity, showcasing her lifestyle and beauty brand, while she actively engages in a rigorous fitness regimen.

Serena Williams on why she embraced her postpartum stomach | Daily Mail Online

In August 2023, Serena welcomed her second daughter, Adira River Ohanian. Following this, she began documenting her postpartum weight loss journey on social media. This year, she delighted fans by fitting into clothes she had struggled with before pregnancy. In July, she celebrated slipping into a Valentino denim midi skirt after multiple attempts. By October, she showcased a floral wraparound dress that fit comfortably, demonstrating her progress and joy.

However, not everything has been smooth sailing. Earlier today, Serena expressed frustration over the weighing scale’s readings. In a post on X, she wrote, “I can’t take anymore negativity and lies. And that’s why I won’t get on scales anymore… Can you relate?”

Recently health concerns have also played a role in Serena’s life. Earlier in May, she discovered a benign branchial cyst in her neck that required removal. After surgery, she resumed sharing her fitness journey and adopted a vegan diet alongside her sister Venus Williams to address health issues. Veganism is believed to aid in weight loss due to its focus on plant-based foods and lower calorie density. But is that what Serena is suggesting with her post on X? Possibly no.

Serena’s husband Alexis Ohanian, on the other hand, has admitted to not taking his workouts seriously. He humorously confessed during the Athlos NYC event last month that he hasn’t run since “high school football” where it was actually a punishment. Ohanian, however, wants his daughters to be as fit as their mother.

At the Athlos NYC event in October, Alexis Ohanian showcased not just his passion for sports but also his dedication as a father. He reminisced about the fun he had with his daughter, Olympia, at this women-only track and field event, which he helped create. The 7-year-old was a constant presence, joining Ohanian during interviews and cheering from the stands. As he interacted with American Track and Field athlete Justin Gatlin, Ohanian humorously reflected on his own fitness levels and shared his hopes for his daughters.

When asked about his personal best in the 100m sprint, Ohanian responded with playful disbelief. “Are you kidding me? Did you see me walking in here? Big Fella doesn’t sprint. The only time I ran was high school football as a punishment,” he joked. He then expressed a desire to spare his daughters the embarrassment of watching him struggle on the track. “A 41-year-old out-of-shape dad sprinting 100m, no one wants that. I gotta think of the legacy I leave behind for my little girls,” he added, highlighting his commitment to being a positive role model.

Ohanian’s initiative to promote women’s sports began in April when he announced plans for Athlos and committed funding through his venture capital firm, Seven Seven Six. His self-deprecating humor reflects a common theme. He often critiques himself while celebrating his daughters’ potential. In September, a photo of their daughter running was shared on Instagram. When a fan pointed out that Olympia’s athleticism comes from her ‘mama,’ Ohanian expressed gratitude as he responded saying, ‘thankfully.’

While Serena Williams was as athletic as anyone on the Tour at her peak, she has also been more candid than ever with her weight loss journey post pregnancy.

Coco Gauff prevailed in a three-hour title match at the 2024 WTA Finals to claim her first trophy at the prestigious year-end event.

On Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the 20-year-old American edged Chinese Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen in the championship round.

The world No. 3 previously beat No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals and No. 2 Iga Swiatek in round-robin play this week.

With her 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(2) comeback victory, Gauff became the fourth American to win the WTA Finals before turning 21, joining Chris Evert (1973, 1975), Tacy Austin (1980) and Serena Williams (2001). Gauff is the youngest champion at the season finale since Maria Sharapova (17 in 2004) and the first American titlist since Williams won her fifth year-end trophy in 2014.

In the final, Gauff came back from a break down in the second set and twice recovered a break in the final frame, including stopping Zheng from serving out the match at 5-4.

“Just staying resilient, fighting for every point,” Gauff said in her post-match press conference. “I know I was like a couple points away from losing, but I just tried to stay in the moment, honestly, and I’m really proud of myself.”

The trophy is the third of Gauff’s 2024 season (Auckland, Beijing) and the ninth of her young career. Her Riyadh run also secured her the year-end world No. 3 ranking for the second straight season; she reached a career-high of No. 2 this June.

Now a perfect 8-0 in hard-court finals at tour-level, including her title-clinching comeback against Sabalenka at the 2023 US Open, Gauff is 9-1 overall in title matches. Her reaction after match point showed just how much this one meant to her.

“At the end of the match, when I, like, fell on the floor, I didn’t think I was going to do that,” Gauff said.

“I kind of made a promise to myself that I will only save that for Grand Slams. But honestly, to the way the match went, I was like, ‘I’m just tired. I just want to lay on the ground.'”

Her hard work was handsomely rewarded with $4.8 million in prize money, more than doubling her previous winnings from the 2024 season. The payout is the largest in WTA Tour history.

Townsend finishes doubles runner-up

The doubles championship at the 2024 WTA Finals was a rematch of this year’s Wimbledon final. American Taylor Townsend and Czech Katerina Siniakova beat Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe in the London matchup but were beaten, 7-5, 6-3, on Saturday in Riyadh.

Townsend and Siniakova were a perfect 4-0 this week en route to the final, winning two match tiebreaks in round-robin play. The eighth seeds also won a second-set tiebreak against Chan Hao-Ching and Veronika Kudermetova in the semifinals.

Siniakova, the WTA’s doubles year-end No. 1, won five titles with five different partners this season—including with Gauff at Rolad Garros.

Former world No 4 Adriano Panatta has claimed Novak Djokovic resigned himself to “giving up” in his Shanghai Masters final defeat to Jannik Sinner.

The Italian tennis great, who has often been a harsh critic of Djokovic‘s, also insisted he has “great admiration” for the Serbian and explained he simply “loved Roger Federer more.”

Sinner downed Djokovic 7-6(4), 6-3 in the title match at the 2024 Shanghai Masters to level his head-to-head series with the tennis icon at 4-4. The world No 1 has beaten Djokovic three times in a row and won four of the pair’s last five meetings.

Djokovic won more points in a high-quality opening set that featured no break points, but Sinner crucially performed better in the tiebreak to edge it.

The 37-year-old’s level dropped early in the second set and he was punished by the 23-year-old Italian, who was ruthless in closing out the win for his seventh title of 2024.

Panatta lauded Sinner for his consistency this year and argued most of the Italian’s rivals struggle to match his level for more than an hour in matches.

“He won again, he confirmed this extraordinary year that he is playing in a way that is beyond belief, because it is true that he has made a lot of progress in these last months, but I must say that the continuity and the average level of play is very high,” he told Corriere dello Sport.

“Even when he doesn’t play very well, with players from six and below he can never lose. When he plays well he doesn’t even lose with the first four. Then I must say that the gap now is between him, [Carlos] Alcaraz and the others.

“He plays continuously for two-three hours always at a very high level. The others play like him, but for an hour, an hour and a quarter, then they can’t keep up the pace.”

The former French Open champion reinforced his point as he asserted that the final between Sinner and Djokovic was over after the first set.

“He (Djokovic) played well, but for exactly one hour. After the first set, there was no more match, so I think that Djokovic also resigns himself to giving up,” Panatta continued.

“I believe that a player like him, who was probably the best of all time in terms of results, is not a player who can allow himself to leave the court, I don’t say humiliated, but with a good beating from Sinner.

“I’m a little sorry, because I have great admiration for Djokovic. I always say that I didn’t love Djokovic, but that’s not true. I loved [Roger] Federer more.”

The countdown is on to the final event of Rafael Nadal’s tennis career and the scramble to be present to witness his farewell in Spain is reaching fever pitch.

The 38-year-old, who won 22 grand slam titles, including 14 at the French Open, revealed the news in an emotional video message posted on X.

Nadal, who is a 14-time French Open champion, has struggled with various injuries over the last couple of years that have limited him to a handful of tournaments.

Rafael Nadal Officially Announces Retirement From Tennis

Last year he announced he expected 2024 to be his final season, and it became increasingly clear through the summer that the end was nigh.

“I’m here to let you know that I am retiring from professional tennis,” said Nadal in a video message.

“The reality is that it has been some difficult years, these last two especially. I don’t think I have been able to play without limitations.

“It is obviously a difficult decision, one that has taken me some time to make. But, in this life, everything has a beginning and an end.”

Nadal confirmed his final event will be playing for Spain at the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga next month in what will be a fitting and emotional end to an illustrious career.

With the final of the biggest competition in team tennis taking place in Spain, this will be one of the most emotional events in the history of the sport, as the local fans will get a chance to bid farewell to one of their nation’s ultimate sporting icons.

Nadal could be playing alongside Carlos Alcaraz if the duo revive their doubles partnership with last summer’s Olympic Games in Paris, with tickets for the Davis Cup Final selling out in double quick time.

Spain’s semi-final against the Netherlands sold out in double quick time and fans have also snapped up tickets for the host nation’s potential semi-final.

Tickets for the final are also all gone, with all matches for an event that will see world No 1 Jannik Sinner play for Italy and Taylor Fritz playing for the USA set to be played in front of sell-out crowds.

The demand for tickets is highlighted when you look at the ticket resale sites, with two tickets together courtside for the Spain vs Netherlands quarter-final tie listed at a staggering £11,848 (US $15456), and two more tickets on sale for an eye-watering £24,680 (US $32200).

Malaga has proved to be a hugely popular venue for the Davis Cup Finals and even though Spain were not taking part last year, Netherlands captain Paul Haarhuis was among those impressed by an event that has become a fitting finale to the tennis season.

“Malaga has proved to be a fantastic city to host the Davis Cup Finals,” said Haarhuis, as he spoke to Tennis365 earlier this year.

“Last year was exceptional because even when Spain didn’t qualify, every match was sold out. Netherlands vs Italy in Malaga was completely full and that is what the Davis Cup needs.

“What makes the Davis Cup special is the crowds and over the last couple of years, we played our matches in February it was an amazing atmosphere.

“After both matches, our players said to me this was the best atmosphere they ever had and that’s what we want in this competition.

“What we saw in Malaga last year was fantastic for the Davis Cup and hopefully we can have more of the same this year.”

At the age of seven, we are pretty sure Olympia Ohanian Jr. has played more sports than any other kid her age.

First, it was soccer, then she was interested in tennis, and now it seems the eldest daughter of Serena Williams and Alex Ohanian is an avid golfer. And all the credit might go to Tiger Woods. Yes, Williams and Ohanian share a pretty close relationship and even share a business with Woods. The Ohanian family owns the LAGC team in Woods’ venture TGL, and even Olympia has a share to her name.

And what else she has is a golf club set gifted by Woods. In an appearance on the Gayle King in the House radio show, the Reddit co-founder shared that he and Olympia Ohanian Jr. started playing golf every Sunday, all thanks to Woods. Talking about Olympia’s sudden interest in golf, Ohanian added, “I’m her daddy caddy I don’t know how to play golf I never played golf but Uncle Tiger gifted some clubs and I was like Olympia you better learn how to play golf.” Thus, their golf journey started, but being a kid, Jr. is more intrigued by her uncle’s name and has asked if it is actually ‘Tiger.’

Regardless, courtesy of her playing golf, Alexis has also bought clubs for himself and is playing the sport. However, he revealed that he usually stays on the range while Olympia Ohanian Jr. goes to the course with her instructor Brittany Ferrante. Olympia turned 7 last month, and her father shared on Instagram how he needed to buy her new clubs as she was growing out of the gift from Tiger Woods. Surely, he would have gifted her the new set and their Sunday golf tradition has been followed. Just two weeks ago, Ohanian posted on Instagram and shared that Olympia made a bogey.

The Reddit co-founder usually shares Olympia Ohanian’s progress with fans on Instagram and it seems unlike soccer and tennis, she has not lost interest in golf just yet. While Ohanian expressed that he supported every hobby of his daughter and didn’t expect her to follow one thing, what does Mama Williams think of Jr. sliding away from tennis?

As an athlete, Serena Willaims surely hoped that her daughter Olympia Ohanian Jr. would follow in her footsteps just like Tiger Woods’ son, Charlie Woods. From an early age, Jr. played tennis to some extent, but slowly her focus shifted to different things. So when Williams appeared on the CBS News’ Person to Person with Norah O’Donnell show, she unveiled how Olympia “doesn’t actually like to play tennis too much.”

Williams shared how it was a bit disappointing because Olympia plays good tennis and she has the talent to be great one day. So what’s the solution? The 43-year-old revealed that she was trying various things to get her back to tennis and said, “Maybe I can push her into tennis by getting other kids to have a group lesson. I think that’s what I’m gonna do.” But it seems that it has not worked yet!

With her father’s support and Ohanian being a daddy caddie, Olympia is in her golfing era and not leaving it soon. Who knows, she may stick to it this time, and Tiger Woods‘ thoughtful gift may give the golf world the next generation of golfing legends!
